Big Shipping Price ***INCREASE***

The new rates are out, however, PSA didn't do any favors. I was expect lower with no more registered mail.
I'm looking to send out a 90 card submission, value $1200 oin the February Special.
On the old system, this would cost $41.75.
In the new system, this is $29.95 + (90 - 25) * $0.25 or $46.20.
That's almost an 11% increase in cost to ship what is a more inexpensive way.

fewer submissions and with fewer cards per order. Prices on ebay, in general, have gone down
and I just have to be more selective than ever. I am a collector, but I also want the stuff I collect to
hold some value too.
This is a free market economy and PSA does have the right to revise their shipping prices accordingly.
I'll probably use them for low value orders.
<< <i>Are their fed-ex ground return shipping charges posted anywhere on their site? The back of the sub refers to fed-ex, but there's no mention of charges.

Return shipping via FedEx is on the submitter's account, not a charge from PSA.

Free shipping, the ebay way
<< <i>Maybe the plan is to get people to open FedEx accounts, so they don't have to go to a postal outlet to drop off (FexEx picks up), so that would be an additional savings in addition to the price increase for lower service and 'in house' insurance. >>
USPS picks up too...
...but I agree with the posters who suggest using FedEx. It costs nothing to set up an account, you can print labels on your printer and in my experience the shipping has been fast and trouble free.
Do you guys have some way of arranging insurance in your fed-ex account or do you just take the chance that nothing happens?

The first $100 of declared value is included. It was about 35 or 50 cents per $100 thereafter, may be more now. Too lazy to look up but just go to fedex.com and check it out for yourself.
It ought to be interesting to hear PSA's response now. It's hard to understand why Joe would say they're passing the savings to us, and then RAISE the cost.
Got me... maybe we'll get an answer, maybe we won't.
Either way, I doubt many (if any) will stop using PSA's services because of this.

Yeah, it wasn't really the rates that had me confused. I've looked through my account. I still don't see how you arrange insurance when you're not the sender since psa does not insure the packages for your declared value. I guess I'll call psa when they open.

True. If it is an increase, it can't possibly be that significant. Definitely won't effect my subbing. The anger probably comes from being nickle and dimed.

Was that insured?
I've considered using FedEx as well, but what kept me from doing it was the insurance coverage I'd have to find on my own.

That is very strange. When I spoke to FedEx, they said they do not offer insurance on collectibles. Which company do you use for coverage beyond the $100?
The breakeven point is somewhere north of 50 cards. At a declared value of anywhere south of $5K, submitting 25 or 50 cards is always less by anywhere from $.05 to $7.55 with one exception - 50 cards at $2K costs $1.20 more. At 100 cards, the rates almost double.

86.20 for 100 cards insured $2000-$5000 isn't right. It would be 29.95 + (.25 * 75) = $48.70

Where the hell did I get 86.40???? You're right. So, it's essentially cheaper or a wash up to 100 cards.

Fedex will cover a package for its declared value if they find themselves at fault for loss/damage. The rep said they would cover sports cards, just not antiques.
However, for return shipping, PSA does not declare a value on fed ex packages. You need your own third party insurance if you want the package insured.
edited to add: The psa rep said fedex wouldn't cover collectibles. It's certainly possibly that the fedex rep I spoke to was wrong. If no declared value is placed on the packages, then it's a moot point.

This was also my understanding. It's the return shipping from PSA that is of greatest concern. A $100 package going to PSA could (depending on grades) be a $1000 package coming back.
And it's the 3rd-party insurance requirement in the return package that kept me from setting up a Fedex account
<< <i> If they don't declare a value, then how the heck does USPS mail insurance work? >>
The way I read it was (maybe) when using Fed Ex PSA does not declare a value?
In the past (since I never had a problem) perhaps they used a 3rd party insurance?

I was only talking about fedex packages. USPS packages are insured for your declared value. Who there insured with, I don't know. It seems like it's with a third party insurer, but I didn't go there.
<< <i>On my submission forms under the check box for selecting Fed Ex is a space for your Fed Ex account #, Insurance limit, service level, and if you want it sent signature required. You have complete control over how PSA ships your package using your FedEx account number. If you want to save money by instructing PSA to declare no value on your $10,000 box of cards and ship it with no signature required it's entirely up to you. If the box gets lost it's your problem. If you pay the normal PSA published rate to ship your cards then PSA is responsible for your cards. >>
Well that's not what I was told by the two psa reps I spoke with.
The second one said point blank there is no declared value on your return shipments via fed ex. Not an option. She also said that if you use fed ex, the value you declare on your form is just for any third party insurance you have, meaning it's useless if you aren't using a separate insurer.
I'll ask Carol to respond to this.

The reason we ask for the declared value for Fed Ex in that area is because you may have a limit of insurance for each package by your third party insurer so it is a double check on our part to not exceed that when packing an order(s) to be shipped back to you. One person may carry 5000 per package another may carry 100,000 per package. It may depend on the day of the week an item is shipped. You may have a lower limit if shipped on a Friday vs. shipped on a Monday.
If PSA ships something to you on our Fed Ex account the package is fully insured. Right now we only offer Fed Ex on some items through PSA/DNA.
I haven't checked the rules in awhile and I see in another post someone linked my response from 2006 so I don't know if things have changed but....
My understanding is that if you are going to have us ship orders back to you on your Fed Ex account you need to have your own third party insurance.
I believe Fed Ex only will cover up to $100 of value. This could have changed over the years and Fed Ex is your best place to check on what Fed Ex policies are and how they may apply to you.
Over the years people have asked where to get this insurance and I've always told them to start with your current agent, if they don't do it they should know who does.

Steve,
I don't understand your comments here.
We don't ship orders back Fed Ex as a general rule on our Fed Ex account.
Are you referring to PSA shipping orders back to you on your Fed Ex account?
If so, please see my previous post regarding insurance.'
Any packages we send Fed Ex on our account we do have insurance for it via third party.
The confusion seems to stem from the difference of PSA using their account vs. your account.
