RIP - SAAB - Updated - welcome back SAAB

Sad day here. Been with SAAB for almost 20 years now. GM screwed them up so badly over the last 10 years or so that I guess this was inevitable.

This sucks

Bummer I lost my job at DHL last year due to poor management. Few people at the top ruined it for 1000's.

I'm so sorry for what you're facing. SAAB has been mismanaged for quite a while , and I know even poorer management has taken over GM , so this may end up being a blessing in the end.

I think GM is getting a bad rap regarding the SAAB. It was a niche brand and probably wouldn't have lasted this long without the support of GM. If GM is guilty of anything, it is not getting more involved sooner like Ford did when the bought Volvo.

SAAB was never going to survive with their limited car line-up. GM should have introduced a SUV (based on a GM design) earlier during the SUV cycle rather than at the end.

Plus that whole Born from Jets ad campaign was awful.

I remember when oil had to be added to the gas.

    .................

I test drove a convertible, about 15-years+ ago; it was VERY nice.
Bought an Audi 90 instead though; good car.

    ............

Currently, it is tough to beat a nice Escalade. So, GM is still in the mix

  • Dang, I am living in the past. My garage has a Saab 9-5 (dead brand), Dodge Durango (dead vehicle line), and a 1970 Olds 442 convert (dead brand).

Goodbye to the maker of one of the most comfortable cars I have ever driven with one of the worst traction control systems ever imagined.

the story between the two swedish companies that made outstanding automobiles (saab and volvo) was similar to a story of two kids at an orphanage. one got a good home and got put on the right track the other got sent to a disfunctional home and ended up a failure.

    it is sad

I don't think I've ever even sat in a Saab, but sorry to see your dealership impacted.

I had a 2000 Saab 9-5 Aero. It was a sweet ride... at least when it was new. I always enjoyed driving a more unique vehicle.

    Good luck at work.

Time to change my Avatar I guess...had the Saab logo since 2002.
  • Saab never caught on with the masses here in the US. The price was too close to a similar BMW on many models and people usually choose the name which carries more of a status symbol.

Saab's heyday was in the 80's when Yuppies the world over were buying Swedish/German/French automobiles, the US Cars were uninspiring, and the Japanese cars were still primarily considered econo cars.

    RIP Saab.

    · Spyker Cars finalizes deal over the purchase of Saab Automobile
    · Transfer of ownership has taken place
    · Saab exits liquidation and the management are back in control
    · Transaction signals the start of an exciting new era for Saab
    · Saab and Spyker to operate under parent company Spyker Cars N.V.

Trollhättan. Spyker Cars N.V. today confirmed it has finalized the deal with General Motors Company to purchase Saab Automobile AB. The transfer of ownership took place at TIME on February 23. Prior to the close of the deal Saab exited liquidation and control was reinstated to Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile's CEO, and his management team. Going forward Saab Automobile and Spyker Cars will operate as sister companies under the umbrella of the Amsterdam Euronext listed parent company Spyker Cars N.V. (Ticker symbol:SPYKR). This transaction secures the future of Saab Automobile and signals the start of an exciting new era for the iconic brand.
Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars NV said: "We are delighted - Saab's future is now secure." He continued: "From today we will be concentrating all of our efforts into reviving Saab and transforming it into a sustainable and profitable company with the confidence to be bold. We will reinforce the emotional experience between Saab drivers and their cars and we will focus on Saab's historical strengths in the fields of independent thinking, aircraft heritage, ecological performance and motorsport.
"Through this acquisition we add approximately 15 euros per share in equity and 60 euros of assets. With a well funded business plan in place we are looking forward to working with Saab's management on the realization of that plan and bringing exciting new products to our customers. Real Saabs, Saab Saabs"
Jan Åke Jonsson, CEO of Saab Automobile AB said: "Today's announcement is great for Saab's customers, dealers, suppliers and employees around the globe, the level of passion and support shown to Saab over recent months has been remarkable and this does bode well for the future. Now we aim to get back to the execution of our business plan, starting with the introduction of the new 9-5 later this year, and with the continued support of our employees and business partners I am confident we will succeed."
"This transaction represents the successful outcome of months of hard work and intense negotiations, all aimed at securing a sustainable future for this unique brand, and we are pleased with the positive outcome," said John Smith, GM vice president for corporate planning and alliances. "This is a great day for Saab employees, dealers and suppliers, and a great day for millions of Saab customers and fans worldwide."

low to mid 40s I think.

The new body style 9-5 is going to be huge and is one of the nicest looking SAABs ever.

It was really going to be shame if this car was never given a chance.

I'm about as giddy as a school girl right now.

Just found out a little while ago that I got an invite to the 2010 North American Dealer Meeting on Tuesday in Boston.

The significance of this is that I will get to meet the guy that bought and saved SAAB from the GM scrapyard - Victor Muller. I can't wait to shake that guys hand and thank him for what he's done.

I'm also seeing an opportunity to be a real dork and get his autograph image

The president of SAAB will be there as well. I'm thinking of getting the 2 of them to sign a picture of them with a SAAB and a Spyker in the background.

Now I just need to find a good pic. I've seen some perfect ones on the net but all of them are too low of a resolution to print.

WOW, have things changed since my first post in this thread.
