If you had an unopened box of 52' Topps Hi #'s

I think the general consensus would be to rip that sucker, but what would be more valuable: an unopened box or a ripped box with a Mantle rookie or two that could be psa graded? Does an unopened box even exist after all these years?

From what I understand you wouldn't know if it was a high # box unless you opened a pack. So there probably isn't a way to determine if any of the unopened packs or boxes taht remain are high #'s. I would open half and sell the other half. Either that or open them until I had at least one Mantle and Matthews card and sell the rest. image

I would consult with the good folks over at packsearchers.com first
  • a high box would yield about 5-6 Mantles. I hear the Mantle was actually double or even triple printed!!! nobody wanted them back in the day, so most got destroyed. this left the HI's scarce, but of those that are out there, more than others are Mantles. I would have to rip away!

    They would not be opened.

If I had 2 boxes, they would not be opened.

If I had a dozen boxes, I'd crack 2 and keep the rest.

    1. Have Steve at BBCE confirm legit.

    2. Have them graded. Not sure which company.

    3. Shop around to auction houses for selling estimate and commission rates.

    4. Based on those numbers, shop on a pack basis to private individuals.

    5. Sell everything.

    6. Put 10% away for my trouble (discretionary income).

    7. Put the rest in a diversified portfolio including TIPS.

At least one full box does exist but I have no idea if it has high numbers or not. Plus I don't think all of the packs are original to the box so it would not be a proper assortment.

I was told by the owner of our local card shop, that there is a family in my town that has an unopened box of 52 hi's stashed away. Even though it probably isn't true, I would like to believe it.

You can't get a Mantle rookie in 1952 Topps; you need a 1951 Bowman wax box for that. But to answer the question, I'd first get it authenticated by Mr. Hart, then I'd sell it to the highest bidder, then use the money to buy a whole set! image

I think maybe I'd dump it in the Atlantic.

    I kid, I kid.

Rip! (a few packs at least)
  • I'd fly out to PSA, rip and have them graded right out of the pack.

You only live once. Rip it.

    "Molon Labe"

  • I'd rip the entire box and grade every single. I'd then sell the wrappers and box on the internet to the highest bidder! haha... No, I'd rip half the box slowly.....grade the rest and stick them one by one with a $15,000 BIN on eBay.
  • actually if i have 3 hard boiled eggs, a jar of salt beef a peanutbutter and bannana samich before bed i have that same box every time, until i wake up,,, image ,,bj
