My new collecting focus... my 30 Baseball Rookies List (Jay Bruce scan added March 2)

P is always risky, but I'd add Kershaw to that list.

I was really on the fence with him. I think he is going to be amazing (already is) but not sure who I would take out. maybe Posey 9as he hasn't really played yet.

I would personally remove the 2006 Prince Fielder as it is not a true RC. Kershaw or Sandoval would definitely make more sense in that spot.

I did think of that too and still might do that. I just really like Prince. Too bad he had a rookie card back in 2002 and then another in 2005. Heck of a player.

Matt, Scans PLEASE! Also thank you for the PM the other day, I have been sick for a week and am just getting back on my feet. Lastly, I would agree that, Fielder card sticks out like a sore thumb, maybe add the Chase Utley Bowman Auto? or Bowman Chrome. The auto is much more difficult.

Cant wait to see some scans!

    Good Luck,

The more I think about this I have to agree that the Fielder just isn't cutting it. As for the Utley, I actually owned and just sold a PSA 9 of the 2002 Bowman Auto. I am going to keep this collection just Bowman Chrome and he only has a 2002 card not a 2001 so, I would be in the same boat as the Fielder.

I am leaning towards the Kershaw RC as it is his best and a nice signed high value card.

    << <i>Kershaw RC >>

can't go wrong with Kershaw, Billingsly would be another if you want to stay with another Dodger Pitcher. Also, why NO Jose Reyes?

Replace Jose Reyes for Billy Butler or just make it 26 and call it your top 25 Baseball Rookies.

I love Carlos Lee, so I would have to have his 1998 Chrome in over a guy who hasn't played yet like Heyward. I would also have to put someone in for 2000 in place of maybe Votto. It would be cool to have at least one from every year. Maybe Adrian Gonzalez or Mark Buehrle. Maybe even a guy like Kinsler over Posey, too.

I already have a PSA 10 2003 Upper Deck Prospect Premieres Autograph RC of Aaron Hill. I've had it for years now and love it!

I guess it depends on whether these are simply your personal favorites of the era, or if you're also buying/collecting them as investments. If it's the latter, I might take McCann off the list. He's a very good all-around C and all, goes 2nd in a fantasy draft, but he's a finished product so there's not much more upside. If he replicates those numbers for another 10 years(which is tough for a C) he's probably a HOFer in the Bill Dickey mold. Perhaps Posey too. He has a great shot, but if you made this list 4-5 years ago you'd probably have Delmon Young and Rickie Weeks on this list.

Oh, man, I love your idea and I love looking at those cards, Matt! Very cool!

I'm from SF, and I must strongly add my recommendation to bounce Posey. The Giants are a little po'd at him this off-season; heck, they just brought Benjie back (to appease Timmy, no doubt).

Pablo is definitely your man for the 25th slot!

Well. Just like with my hockey card list this one too has grown. I plan on making it a 30 card collection but am stuck at 28 right now. I think I might wait until the season starts to see what two cards I might add.

    I have added in

    Clayton Kershaw
    Justin Morneau
    Pablo Sandoval

thanks for looking and I will add some more scans tomorrow.

A bit about my list. With hockey it was players I grew up collecting and watching. With this baseball list it isn' about trying to grab the next Pujols but about collecting the bowman chrome rookies of my favourite current players and a few young prospects that I have been following and hoping will be stars in the MLB. I plan on keeping these cards around and am not trying to buy and then sell them in a year or two for a large profit.

Oh and I was never a fan of Weeks or Young. I would have had Brandon Wood though as I always liked following him and wish that someone would give him a chance.

Well, I finally had some time to scan in my other baseball cards for my 30 card list.

    Enjoy!

oh and any help with the last 2 spots would be great. Looking for great players and a nice high end bowman chrome rookie.

he'll get it this year. Figgins is gone, and although Macier Izturis will likely get some starts against tough righties, he should accrue at least 450-500 ABs unless he totally tanks...which is possible given his 200 K potential. Could be Mark Reynolds with a bit less speed though.

Great list. My own bias, by the way, but what about Matt Cain (2002 Gold Refractor)?

I have started a pretty substantial Kershaw collection because I think he could be really, really good.

What about Ryan Howard? I think I might second the Rasmus or Jay Bruce.

    Geordie, don't read this.

  • I really like your collection. I don't know much about these cards. I am guessing they are not cheap, are they hard to find?

Matt, Great cards to look at. Very impressive, Can't wait to see as you make progress on this and your hockey set. Really good idea you have.

Thanks to all for you comments and suggestions. This has been a lot of fun to think of the list and pick up the cards. As for prices they range from $30-$250 in price and some are rarer than others.

    Thanks again!
