Fun ebay user o' the day...

I got this email from someone who won an auction from me yesterday.

"I'm thrilled to get his card. However, we are having HUGE computer problems which are preventing me from accessing 2nd or 3rd links in a series, thus keeping me from using the invoice system to pay. It just spins and spins until it kicks me off. Terribly frustrating and we are being told we may need a new server...argh! Anyway, if you send me your email address for use at paypal, I will go to my account and make payment directly to you via paypal without needing to use an invoice. Thanks so much for your understanding and cooperation. I apologize for the inconvenience. ebay ID: ****** ebay email: ******@yahoo.com"

He is a zero feedback user.

Any suggestions? Just tell him to go to Activity>Buy>Won and click Pay Now? If he can send me an email through eBay, he should be able to use the "Pay Now?"

Had to be my "high-dollar" item ($40) for this week that he won.

  • Make sure it's a confirmed paypal address. Otherwise you'll be hosed.
  • I just made a purchase through BIN and had no problems.

Tell him a check will be fine. That or the good old money order.

Tell him when he sends it to send it as a gift or something other than item bought, it will end the SNAD effect
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

Everybody likes to save money, but the "gift" scheme has some risks.

Obviously, the buyer is at supreme risk. He has no INR or SNAD protection.
His only recourse is a claim for "unauthorized use;" he must claim that the
card number was stolen or used w/o permission.

Seems safe for the seller, right? It's not.

A scamming buyer can simply file an "unauthorized use" claim - first with
PayPal and then with the credit-card company. The "gift" paid to the seller
will be grabbed by PP; if PP does not fall for the scam, the credit-card co
    might.

Even if an "investigation" of the UAU claim finds for the seller, the process
can take months. AND, many fraudulent UAU claims beat the system.

When dealing with a stranger, sending/receiving "gifts" can cause problems.

Again, I'd go for the check or Money Order - totally removes the flake risk, especially if his bank is a national one where you can cash the check at his bank not yours.
