What are you cracking? BGS slabs? (those things are a pain) If you are doing PSA slabs, then just do them like this, very easy.

  • Mike, is that your Aaron? If yes did you get a bump in the grade? It looks like a 2 before crackage.

lol, it's PSA slabs, but the more recent ones are tougher......i've been able to carve a groove into the tops of a few so far to create an air pocket....once that gets done, it's just a matter of plunging the screwdriver in and giving a twist.....i overplunged once and ripped the back of a card, made me sad.....my wife was "cracking" up. image

I've decided that it's almost worth the money to avoid cracking BGS slabs by sending them in for crossover, then cracking the PSA slab if you don't like the result.

    Those BGS ones are tough.....

  • My last BGS crackout was an 82 Topps Ripken BGS 9. Went from a BGS 9 to an EOT to a PSA 8.

    Card cost $52.
$10 in sub fees to PSA.
$3 for a box of Band-Aids for my hand and fingers.
    Sold card for $25.

Total loss not including eBay and Paypal fees: $40, about 2 ounces of blood and a small part of my sanity.

yeah, but there's no substitute for the feeling of pride one experiences after a great achievement.

14 outta 15 now, no blood since card #2. image

I use good wire cutters and do it the way mike does. The wire cutters are great for BGS because you can just cut off the corner and go to cracking.

Let's come up with a tool specifically for cracking holders and then we can all buy PSA 10's!

Yes, it's my Aaron, but I didn't crack it to try and get a bump. I cracked it in order to get it autographed.

PSA holders are quite easy to open.

All you need is a chisel, hammer and vice.

Place the card in the vice sideways, with the label end hanging off to the right side.

Put the chisel on the seam.

Give it a hard tap with the hammer. The seal will pop right away.

Turn the card over and repeat to other side by the label.

The chisel can now be put in the opening and then work your way around the slab.

    It will pop very easily.

    done. final tally:

26 out of 27 old hockey cards successfully removed, blew the no-hitter with two outs in the first.

13 cuts or abrasions on my left thumb and forefinger.

significantly better odds of making back my grading fees on these cards. imageimage
