Another Racing Thread - Post Your Daytona 500 Thoughts

Not sure how many race fans are on here, but I have to say that I haven't seen an Earnhardt drive like that since Earnhardt Sr. Great day for Dale Jr, but you can certainly sense the pressure he feels to win races...Have you seen a more disappointed 2nd place finisher at the Daytona 500??

<< <i>Daytona 500 is one of the few races I watch now. Today's race was painful to watch. >>
no doubt... what a disaster.
I didn't follow it to closely though, can someone clue me in to what happened to Danica(sp?) Patrick?

She doesn't race in the Sprint Cup. She runs the minor league series.

Happy for Jaime -- he made the sprint girl cry during post-race interviews. Would have been nice for Junior. I am about as far away from being a Junior fan as you can get, but I would like to see him do well. It has to be rough to race in the shadow of your dad (considering who his dad was). My horses didn't do too well today, but aside from the two red flags, that was a good race.

Yeah, the Sprint Girl is very easy on the eyes. I got mad after one of the Twin Duels when they had a different girl behind the race winner and I objected outloud to the wife "They changed the Sprint Girl!" She assured me that the normal girl was behind the winner at a different race, so this one was a stand-in most likely.
<< <i>Want technology? Develop a car that can drve in the rain! >>
The cars aren't the issue.
It's the tires. They slide around enough as it is at 190+ MPH. Put 'em out there in the rain, and it'll be a massacre!

Through it all I always made it a point to watch the 500 but today was a joke. If you want to put the 500 on the level of the Super Bowl you can't take 6.5 hours to run 500 miles. That's an average speed of under 77 MPH. Illegal I know but I am sure somewhere in America someone was able to drive 500 miles faster than NASCAR completed the 500. I know it's out of their hands but I was amazed to hear that it was the 70's when DIS was last paved. On top of this they talked like it should be an understood that this happened with the track condition. If this is so understood then have things in place to fix the problem. MLB or the NFL would never live it down if an event had these types of interruptions like the ones today. Still bitter at the fact that I had an appointment this evening and still wasn't able to see who won the race despite watching for a little under 6.5 hours. Ridiculous.

Ms. Sprint Cup #2
They need to have the 500 at the end of the year, screw tradition and get it done. These teams aren't firing on all cylinders at this time of the year and with 9 different winners in 9 years you can see that its due to the teams all being rusty. Alot of people have this as their only win due to it being first race of the season.
Start the season with Taladega or Bristol and leave this to the last race, make people have a race to look forward to. The season normally ends in a wimper anyway with the champion decided most of the time so let it at least be in a race that means something to the winner.
<< <i>Once upon a time I loved me some NASCAR. However I can't stand it now. Much of this had to do with inconsistency in the rules and how races were finished. I have better things to do than watch a race for 3-4 hours just to watch a race get red flagged if the wrong guy is winning and ended early if a guy with a good sponsor has the lead. Too much like pro wrestling.

I live about 3 miles from track, all they have been doing is buying up all the property
around the track, they have plans to build a casino next door.I would say this has been there
#1 priority as of late.It must be crazy to sit there that long, think about leaving at 11,sun is shining, warm weather,
then 6.5 hrs. later, its freezing and your broke because they charge you $6 bucks for a water.I sure am glad to see
all the people leave myself, bring on bikeweek!

I went down there while in high school and visited Daytona USA. My parents had told me that once upon a time I had been to Daytona but I do not remember being there. I loved being able to take the ride around the track as well. Not trying to pile on but it just seemed weird today. There's all of this hype about it being "our Super Bowl" and such but there was very little hype leading up to the race itself in regards to the pre-race stuff shown on the television. FWIW I thought it was awkward that in the hours I watched the telecast I heard no references to Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Granted I flipped between the stations a few times and may have missed it.

I am a huge NASCAR fan and go to the races held at Kansas Speedway every year and have been to every race there since it opened in 2001. Also been to Charlotte and Darlington. If you ever get a chance to go to race, I would highly suggest it. By seeing an event in person, you will GET IT!! You will become addicted. Yesterday's race was one of the best ever (excluding the long delays). It had the most different leaders in Daytona history.
By the way, I met this Sprint Girl at Kansas last year outside the track at the Sprint booth. She is even better looking in person!!!

It likely has nothing to do with it being the first race of the season, it's just how Daytona is. It's literally a toss up every race there. In the last 20 Coke/Pepsi/Firecracker 400's, there have been 15 different winners, and that race is halfway through the season.
All kidding aside, I just find it to be a boring sport to watch on TV. I have actually gone to a few races when I was younger and it is a good spectator sport, but terrible on TV. The notion that it is the #1 sport in attendance because of popularity is stretching the truth a little. They have the largets venues. In a single weekend, a NASCAR race has ONE race at ONE locale. The NFL for instance has 16 games at 16 locations. I would think if the superbowl could find a way to have 500,000 fans at the game, it would be able to sell the tickets out as well.
I saw a list of the rankings from the final and didn't see her name on the list.

She raced on Saturday in the Nationwide event but not the 500.
