OT found out today my ACL is torn

I got injured at work on Wed. today I found out my ACL is torn. I had it repaired in high school, but I guess they don't last forever. One bright spot is the Doctor I got through workers comp works on athletes from the Lakers and Dodgers, so they tell me. I am lucky to have got put on light duty while this gets fixed rather than draw disability. I work for a company that builds large sections of the Boeing 747-8.

  • I think I will be on the boards more often now that I have a desk job. No wonder this nation is going broke.
  • Had 3 ACL surgeries, 1986, 1994, & 1998. With the technology advancements I saw over the 12 year span, it should be even better today. After the initial 3-4 weeks you'll be able to do most normal activities. In 98 I was running slowly on a treadmill 4-5 weeks post op, back on a baseball field 6 months later. Just make sure you hit PT hard, you'll have good and bad days for a while, but keeping working.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

ACL was a tough surgery for me too. Hopefully u have someone around to help u for the first 3 weeks . Especially when u go on the range of motion machine. your spirit can dwindle quick espically of u were a self-suffient person.
Those first weeks are the toughest and try not to eat too many oxycodin.

I was watching a TV show about Bobby Orr last week and they showed all of his scares from his knee operations. What a difference between then and now with their procedures.
  • Tough injury, best of luck to you. I take it you may frequent these boards more often than before.

Good luck on the surgery. I work for a large company handling all of their workers comp. Most companies try to get the people back to work on light duty instead of keeping them out of work. It saves the company lots of money and studies have shown that the injured worker actually heals faster because his day to day routine is not disturbed and he feels like he is still contributing to the comany and society. PM me if you have any questions.

  • I Tore my left ACL two years ago. I had the Dallas Stars team doctor do my surgery and was happy that I had a doc that was well respected. The first two months are the worst. My knee will never be the same, I dont have the range of motion prior to the surgery but at 40 yrs old I wasnt expecting to. Its REAL easy to get discouraged but hang in there, it gets better each day.

I had my ACL repaired 5 months ago. I only really had a lot of pain the first day or two. After that, I had a fair amount but nothing severe. Also was fortunate that the pain meds didn't cause me to be high or otherwise loopy. Took me about a week to be moving much on crutches and I could walk a bit without crutches at 3-4 weeks. Got rid of the crutches and brace at 6 weeks. Lots of physical therapy. I have recovered probably 98% of my original range of motion - my therapists were very pleased with that aspect of my recovery. The CPM (range of motion) machine was very good to me. I guess a lot of people hate them. Personally, I liked it and found it very comforting so I spent a lot more time in it than my doctors told me I had to. That helped a lot. I've hit a bit of a speed bump the last couple weeks as my knee has begun to hurt so I need to get that checked out. Still hoping to be fully recovered in time to play softball this spring.

good luck to ya.just had my right shoulder operated on jan 7th for the second time in 12 years.the first time it was horrendous and very painful through therapy.this time around its gone much easier ,less painful even though the surgery was more extensive.i still do not do any lifting with it but according to my therapist i am way ahead of schedule.however my left one gets done soon.it shouldnt be to bad as it is not as damaged as the right shoulder was.

  • Good luck with that. I found out on Friday that the pain I've been having in my right calf muscle ever since twisting my ankle a few weeks ago is being caused by a torn soleus tendon. (Some support tendon that merges with the Achillies Tendon). So I have four weeks of physical therapy ahead of me, and if that doesn't work to relieve the pain and let the torn tendon heal on its own, I'll go in for surgery as well. Right now, they just have me on some pain medications which are making me quite light-headed and relaxed, however. image
