1990 Pro Set Series 1 Case LIVE BREAK

I'm finally home from my sort-of vacation and waiting for me is a 54-lb collecting milestone:

My 1990 Pro Set case. 20 boxes for potential Lombardi Holograms, Fred Marion errors and all the other 1990 PS goodies!

I arrived late last night and have opened 4 boxes so far. The results are NOT promising:

5-#343 Chris Hinton w/ Trade banner
5-Super Bowl XXII
5-Art Shell (Small "Hall of Fame" on front)
6-Fred Marion all w/ airbrushed belt
6-Mike Ditka
3-Paul Tagliabue SP
0-Lombardi holograms

I have not yet flipped these over to reveal if they contain the rarer variations affecting the reverse. Nor have I checked the backs of any other variations where the error affects the back. This will be done after the final pack has been opened.

I will post shortly with the box 5 & 6 results.

I was wondering what happened with this case. Looking forward to your results. Hope you pull a Lombardi.

5-Mike Ditka (Small Hall of Fame" on front)

Only 5 total Barry Sanders #1 cards so far. Pretty weird. This has now officially become work.

Busting cases of junk wax is always brutal for me. Especially when you are looking for just a handful of cards and don't find any...
  • What's the case run you? Considering how many cards there are in the case, what's your plan of attack? Do you have a few in mind when you open and then afterwards do you look for the rest? If you are trying to find new ones, that must be even more work.

Was just in the basement going through some old stuff and happened upon some cards from this year. How rare is Santa Claus? I have three. I'll answer. Not at all. Those cards are worthless. Darn! image
  • RE: 1990 Santa Claus: Apparently there may be a variation to this card. I don't know what it is but it was mentioned that two versions may exist in a letter I read in an old issue of SCD Basketball, Football and Hockey magazine.

    Boxes 9-12:

7-Chris Hinton PB w/ Trade banner
    8-Super Bowl XXII
7-Art Shell (Small "Hall of Fame" on front)
8-Fred Marion all w/ airbrushed belt
8-Mike Ditka (Small "Hall of Fame" on front)
3-Paul Tagliabue SP (I hate his face at this point)
2-Barry Sanders #1 (just 7 of these out of 12 boxes! I think they were roatated out with Tagliabue)
    0-Lombardi holograms

I think in one version, Santa has a phallic-like object hanging from his torso. Either that or the back of his card has details about Santa's drug suspension.

    Both, actually.

Box 14 just yielded the most interesting find so far:

A sealed empty pack. A flat, prefectly sealed wrapper. This must be where the Lombardi was.

  • If you have a few extra Rodney Hampton and Stephen Baker cards, I would appreciate them if you could dig up 1 or 2 of each.

I think there is a Pro Set Opening Day set where instead of Santa, Johnny Ray is pictured. Also a reverse negative where you can see the lettering on his Raiders T-shirt is backwards.

    Still sore.

That case was the worst possible of the existing runs for that series.

Pro Set series 1 production goes something like this:

-First run (Marion error, Large Type HOF Shell and Ditka, Risien and Dickerson SPs and all the other errors)

-Early run (Corrected Marion, small type HOF Shell w/ 11/25/46 birthdate, small type HOF Ditka and most of the other errors remain uncorrected)

-Middle run (Corrected Marion, small type HOF Shell w/ 11/25/46 birthdate, small type HOF Ditka and many of the other errors corrected)

-Late run (Corrected Marion, small type HOF Shell w/ 11/26/46 birthdate, small type HOF Ditka, reinsertion of Risien SP and all other errors corrected)

I'm not sure where the RARE, transitional Chris Hinton Pro Bowl card fits into this, but probably somewhere in the "early run."

My case was definitely a "Middle run" case. This means I missed all the early correction as well as the late correction like the Shell 11/26/46 birthdate. Plus, I suspect it got harder to pull one of the 9,999 Lombardi Holograms by the time the "middle run" began being printed.
