Posted Feb 10th 2010 12:09AM by TMZ Staff

Captain Phil Harris -- star of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" -- died about an hour ago ... sources tell TMZ.

Harris was hospitalized a few weeks ago after sufferring a stroke while unloading crabs. He had been doing better until the sudden turn.

Captain Harris died in a hospital in Alaska. He was 53.

Harris' kids, Jake and Josh, tell TMZ, "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad, Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. Wow, that stinks. He's been fighting health issues for the past couple of seasons, as the show has chronicled. RIP, Captain Phil.

    But are we surprised?

Lots of cigs, alcohol, stress. He's lucky to have made it to 53!

Don't get me wrong, I'm sad to see him go and its obviously bad for his kids, but Phil should have thought of his health years ago.

I only got hooked on that show last year, but he seemed like a real cool guy.

On a lighter note - it's REAL fun to see 'RIP' written all alone next to your avatar - creates quite the mental image. image

Brain fart - this was supposed to be a quote in reply to dexter's avatar.

When Phil was about 7 or 8 years old I bet he would watch the Flintstones and during the break

the commercial would be of Fred and Barney pushing Winston cigarettes. Then about 5 or 6 years after that

he had to worry if he was going to get his arse shot off in some jungle. All the while he was drilled at school to 'duck and cover'

At 18 he probably had his first (legal) drink and closed out the bar.

Is it any wonder that he is dead? (I'm shocked that I'm not)

    RIP Phil.

    Steve

    Good for you.

RIP. I love that show. Really brought light to that profession for me.
  • Here's a story we ran on our news tonight. I've met Phil a few times and has always been very nice and willing to do interviews. This story includes a interview I shot last September. One story I remember him telling us was, when he was 17 yrs. old he made $130,000 on his first year on a crab boat. He went to the bank to cash it and asked for $42,000 in cash placed in a paper bag. A great guy that will be missed. Doug
