1957 Topps FB and my 7 year old son.....Scan heavy

I took my 7 year old son with me today to a local show. He has yet to show any interest in sports cards so I was excited that he wanted to go. When we get there I continue my search for 59 Topps bb and he just meanders around. I noticed that he began to look thru alot of football cards so I spent some time going thru them with him and talking about them. He knows that I am a set builder so he said that we should build a football set together. I smiled like a kid at Christmas because I was so excited that he wanted to do a set build with me. I gave him some parameters as to what to look for and how to choose his cards and he began his search. I figured he would pick a set from the last few years but he stumbled upon some '57 Topps FB and began to go thru them. After he went thru about 50 cards he decided this was the set, so we started to go thru them together and this is what we came up with $225 later.

Overall I think he did pretty well picking out a nice array of cards in good mid grade quality at a fair price. How do you guys think he did price and decision wise as far as quality? Keep in mind this was all him as far as card choices and price point.

Thanks for your input.

    A favorite set.

One thing I would start to drive home to him hard is
    the critical importance of centering.

Based on the cards I am seeing around, in the years
to come, well/perfectly centered cards are going to be
    commanding HUGE premiums.

    TOTALLY excellent startup.

  • Looks like a great start, with some HOFers, so great way to get him started. Critical football issue also, so what better way to dive into the hobby! Best of luck with the set.

this was the set that got me started in vintage cards, about 6 or 7 years ago. great choice. would be cool if my dad wanted to build it with me! sounds like fun. Not sure what extras I have but I may have some. Get him to watch some footage of these guys, like the ice bowl or super bowl 3 to see some of these guys in action.

Thanks for the comments guys. We spent the afternoon reading about some of the players and the cards and we are both having a great time. Hopefully the project will drag out as we are going to try to look for them together at shows and try to avoid ebay for now. We have 93 cards so far so we are 60% of the way there. I am looking forward to the weeks ahead spending time with my son working on this project.

Here are a few more pickups my son and I came across over the last week or so. They are not the highest of grade examples but should fit in nicely with what we are trying to accomplish.

Great set! I absolutely the 57 Topps set which is what prompted me to get the entire set signed (I'm up to 108 signed cards).

In my opinion, the 57 Topps set is the the 2nd best vintage football set after the 55 Bowman set. You picked up a nice assortment of comments, semi-stars and HOFers in solid condition (most look EX-MT) at a very fair price.

    Good luck in your endeavour!

    Very nice!!!

Ya gotta love some of those poses .... like Webster's!

Speaking of Webster, he looks like Robert De Niro minus the mole!

    Great collection so far!

    Thanks for sharing,

The Lane is as nice as it looks, 4 sharp corners no staining or creasing. Poppa those were my exact thoughts on the Webster when I saw the card. Thanks for the great comments, my son and I are really enjoying the set and each other.

I wish my father had the hobby bug, I would have really enjoyed doing something like this with him as a squirt. You are both lucky to have each other in that regard. The set is beautiful.
