OT - eBay Refund through seller not Paypal

I recently bought a used laptop off ebay that was not as advertised. The screen size was smaller than the seller stated. The seller has been very communicative and agreed to refund my money including the return shipping. My question is, since I've never done a refund without going through Paypal, what recourse, if any, will I have if the seller decides not to refund my money once he receives the laptop. How should I proceed with this refund?

Doubt it is a trap. Just make you get delivery confirmation to prove you returned it.

File the paypal dispute, not as described. Then wait for paypal to rule in your favor. Once they do, send it back and make sure you use delivery confirmation to the same address he used to ship it to you.

IF YOU PAID OVER $250 FOR IT THEN MAKE SURE YOU USE SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION or you could lose your case, the laptop, and your money!

Paypal will refund you original shipping but you have to pay to return it to him.

It may or may not be a "trap;" 50/50 and no way to know for sure.

I would file a PP-claim and follow PP's return instructions.

If the item was more than $250, you need to use Signature Confirmation
    to prove delivery.

I spoke to PP a couple days ago about this. The PP rep said for off-ebay transactions where a refund is involved, your only chance is to get lucky with a kind seller. I agree you should send it with deliv conf, but even proving return delivery will not get your money back if the seller has insufficient funds in his PP account.

I learned this the hard way - for off-ebay transactions always fund it with your bank account or a credit card (not your paypal balance),

I took the "off EBAY" not to mean "outside of EBAY."

If it means "outside of EBAY," there is NO such thing as a PP "SNAD decision"
    in the transaction.

Since SNAD - as employed by PayPal - is a criminal-concept, ONLY EBAY sellers
can be forced to suffer under its enforcement.

If the OP's buy was "outside of EBAY," his only chance to recover his money
is to rely on the seller's honesty OR to file a legit-SNAD with his credit-card
    company.

The purchase was made through eBay. The seller also gave me his FedEx shipping account number to do the return shipping with, I wonder if he will still let me use that if I go through Paypal.

As a seller, I would not pay the return shipping, if a buyer filed with PP, UNLESS
I had a feedback agreement with him BEFORE I paid the shipping.

BUT, if I was a buyer I would be unlikely to trust an unknown seller. Therefore, I
would file a routine PP-claim and pay the shipping myself.

If you paid with a credit card via paypal, you should be fine either way. My credit card allows me 9 months to dispute a charge.
