A quick question about safely getting large paypal payments

Hey guys,
I am entering into a large transaction with a reputable board member.
He is planning on paying through paypal gift.
Are there any dangers (ways to be scammed) that I as the seller need to know about?
I am planning on shipping it fully insured either through UPS or the Post Office with Sig confirmation.
Second and most importantly, I am in no way questioning the integrity of the member with whom I will be dealing.
If said buyer does see this post please in no way be offended.
I am simply attempting to cover my tail in every way when conducting a very substantial transaction.
Thanks

Prolly safe, IF you have confidence in the buyer.

A credit-card chargeback - "unauthorized use" - is about the only risk
    on a "gift" payment.

INS the item and use SigCon.

  • paypal gift, especially a large one as far as I know means the buyer is taking a far bigger chance then you.

thou even with a credit card I believe you can cancel the charges.

lol, I am the buyer and I was just pm'ing some folks to get some reassurance as well. I can assure you that I am good. My ebay account is perfect with over 400 feedback and I have a few different businesses as well. I was just a little worried since you hadn't sold to any verified buyers on paypal.

The only good recourse for a gift-sender is CCCB, on an "unauthorized use" claim.

Easy to win a legit one; hard to win a fake one. (Especially with this thread in the mix.)

If I dont use paypal gift, am I covered just like any other paypal transaction?
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
I really don't think you two have anything to worry about, If I was involved I'd be on the phone talking to the other party and not

    conducting my affairs here.

    But that's just me.

And if I was worried I'd prolly Pm some trusted folks for advice.

    But that is just me.

Hopefully my above statements won't draw me drama.

    Just giving my view.

with that i'm off to bed

    GN everyone
    Good for you.

  • phone call would help me; thou if it's a very big transaction the more barriers protecting the better. Do a normal goods transaction on paypal and up the price by 3.5% (i believe that's the fee) and you have credit card and paypal protection.

if it's disgusting amount of cash i'd use a third party or road trip.

The attractive part about sending the money as a gift is there are no fees under certain circumstances. The money must come from your Paypal balance or checking account. If you're funding the gift with a credit card then there will be normal fees charged on the transaction and when paying you select who will be charged these fees - the buyer or seller. The unattractive part about sending money as a gift is that as the sender of the money you are pretty much screwed if anything goes wrong, especially if you didn't fund the payment from your credit card. If the goal was for both the buyer and seller to avoid all fees then it probably wasn't funded by credit card. If you're funding the payment with a credit card then you'd have more buyer protection if you didn't send it as a gift.

no, I sent him a pm to get back to me and at least confirm my payment. He said he was going to ship today. It's just kind of weird that we exchanged numerous posts in the threads and several pm's up until the time I paid, and now I haven't heard anything from him.

With non-ebay transactions as long as the seller can prove delivery they win. PayPal will let the buyer open an item not as described claim and then they close it and tell you that you lost thirty seconds later.
