Been looking for this item for 5 years, missed it by 2 hours (Update! I've got it now!!!)

I really, really feel sick to my stomach.

I bid over $100 for this item last year and lost it by one bid. Now, it goes for a song in a "buy it now" and I miss it by 2 hrs. I think I'm going to cry.

Every morning I do my search on Ebay for "Topps Test". That covers usually all of the rare stuff I need for my Cardinals team set collection. Sometimes, I will even get really specific and search "1989 Heads Up" or something like that that is more specific. This morning, I was 2 hours late!

Has this every happened to you? Probably not - only me.

1989 Topps Heads Up Ozzie Smith

I did. He said he would check. He said he had a bunch of 1990's and found the 1989 bunch mixed in. He said he would let me know!

I looked through a guys bunch of 80's-90's crap a while back and saw some Heads-ups. Found this pick still in my photobucket. I can't remember how many he had (I took pics of a sampling of his carp), but you can see one in the pic.

    That one's a 1990 pack.

Sorry this happened to you Shane. I saw the Heads Up auctions this morning and thought of you immediately. I noticed he didn't have a Smith for sale--didn't think to check to see if it was already sold (which it apparently was).

    Dang.

Edited to say: The guy has/had most of them WAY under priced.

No need to. I search it every day anyway. I wouldn't have gotten the email before I searched it (I don't think).

I have had it happen a couple of times, very frustrating! Hopefully the guy will have another.

Hope it does not sound like rubbing salt in the wound, but thanks for sharing the link, I was able to get 2 that I needed for player collections.

Wow Shane - sorry to hear this!

Keep your chin up - another will come up - that's the nice thing about ebay. I do understand the price thing - hope the guy may have another.

Ugh. I missed mine, too. $13. Are you kidding me? I was at the doctor when I got my Ebay search email, and by the time I got to work, it was gone. Damn damn damn. This guy left a LOT of money on the table...

So does that mean you search for the item, and also search completed auctions for that item everyday?

I'm just curious how you found it if it was sold.
  • Saved Search emails are usually (for me) 12 hours late.
However, I do have a program called Vienna (I have a mac) that has an RSS feed that is an instant update of Ebay listings.
    Instant.
The RSS feed can be subscribed to at the bottom of a search page (that little orange button).
    I highly recommend it.
(note: you can use whatever RSS/XML reader you want for these, I happen to use Vienna but have used Net News Wire with good results as well, again with a Mac).
    Just my 2 cents.

I did my normal search and saw that there was a bunch listed. I didn't see the Ozzie. That's when a horrible thought entered my mind...did he have it listed and it already sold? That's when I checked the completed items.

That would put my Will at about $4.50. I'd be OK with that.

    What a bummer. image

The reason I asked is because the same thing happened to me a few. And as with you my gut feeling made me check out the completed auctions.

I'm just thrilled to know that a full case actually existed. Maybe there are a few more out there than what I thought.

By the way, I just snatched the Mattingly. I still haven't heard back from the seller, though.

  • Not to spam or advertise but if anyone needs them I have a few extras of these left from a box that I bought a few years ago (where I got my Ozzie). I wouldn't want a ton of $ for them since they are just taking up space here but something near/below fair market would be nice, trades work too (Frank Viola, 2x Mike Greenwell, Ricky Jordan, Ellis Burks and 2x Dale Murphy)

The seller just emailed me. He does not have another Ozzie. I guess now my only option is to somehow get in touch with the buyer. After that, I'll be playing the waiting game again.

    Update!

I now have my 1989 Topps Heads Up Ozzie Smith - finallly!!!!!!!!!!

I made a trade with the Ebay buyer. He does not want me to tell who it was, so I will honor that request. I ended up trading a very nice 1968 Topps Curt Flood signed in silver sharpie, authenticated by PSA/DNA. It also came with a letter of provenance proving that this card came from Curt Flood's personal estate. I also traded an Enos Slaughter signed baseball. He needed the Heads Up for his collection, but he was willing to trade if the trade was in his favor. After several offers and negotiating emails, we came to an agreement on the Flood and the Slaughter.

As of today, I have it in my possession now.

Thanks to (you know who you are).

  • Glad to hear it worked out for you!
