I wish my name ended with a Brew

Hall of Fame slugger Harmon Killebrew will be the special guest when the Birmingham Barons turns back the clock for the June 2 Rickwood Classic.

This year's event celebrates the 100th anniversary of the nation's oldest active baseball park.

Killebrew spent 21 of his 22 seasons with the Washington Senators and Minnesota Twins, hitting 40 or more homers eight times. He finished with 567 career home runs and was the 1969 American League MVP.

"The Rickwood Classic is one of the truly special and unique events in minor league baseball," said Barons General Manager Jonathan Nelson. "With this being the 100th celebration of Rickwood Field, and with the inclusion of a legendary ballplayer such as Harmon Killebrew, this year's Rickwood Classic should be all that more special."

*********

Rickwood Field is a classic and all baseball fans should attend at least one game there. Just make sure that you don't make any wrong turns getting there, it's not in the nicest part of town. I personally have attended games there and I was an extra in the movie 'Cobb'. All I got for being in that movie was a really bad haircut and scolded by the director. Apparently people did not high five back then, so we were not allowed to in the stands.

You will never meet a more humble down to earth man then the Killer.

I was lucky enough to have met him at a card show at my church.

When the dealers were allowed one auto from him I brought up a Nestle card of him and asked

could he address it to Mike and Anthony, he reached over to a pile of cards that he had and made

one for each and did my Nestle the way I had asked.

I still have the Nestle, I have no idea where the other 2 are.

I hope so, with a wife and two daughters I have learned that even the best laid plans go out the window some times. I took the oldest daughter to a Braves game last year and she was ready to go by the bottom of the first.

If I do get to go, I will take many pics of the stadium. It really gives you that turn of the century vibe.

I have been to Rickwood many times, back in the early 80's when the Barons still played there we would go a few times a season. I have been to one Rickwood classic, it was a very cool event with the throwback unis and such. Rickwood is a great venue for Baseball.
