A collecting milestone: My first sealed case (20 years in the making).

A big deal to me, I won my very first sealed case of sports cards yesterday.

After 20 years of purchasing boxes, packs, sets and lots of 1990 Pro Set football, the stars finally aligned to allow me the chance to tear open the cardboard carton of a brand-spankin' new case containing 20 Series 1 boxes.

I'm not sure why, but I just don't see these offered for sale anymore. Kruk and BBC used to have them but I've had a tough time finding them lately. I have been opening this product since I was 9 years old, always in search of a Lombardi hologram and the handful of rare variations like the Fred Marion "belt" error. Who knows what bizarre treasures are lurking within those 720 polypropylene tombs.

This is a real treat.

Thanks! No grading though. I'll be passing on anything that isn't a variation, insert or printing flaw etc.

No matter what the product is, I always love ripping an entire case all by myself. Have fun!
  • Enjoy even the sight of it being delivered, let alone ripping open the case flaps and seeing all those boxes inside (or at least the top row)

good luck with the variants and those holos too

I think I may list any highlights for each box, anything special gets a scan/photo.

This might be a good way to practice using my phone's supposed fancy camera.

good luck. i remember hearing a long time ago.. that the odds of hitting a lombardi holo were like 1 in 4 cases.. so good luck. That is one football card from that erra that i've yet to track down. Ive heard that the Hockey holo is even tougher. Good luck

Are those the yellow boxes? If so, I think I bought about 5 boxes from Kay-Bee back in the day because they were super marked-down and fit my lack of card budget. I could always afford another and as result have like 7 of each of the Seau, George and Rob Moore rookies. Good stuff. I remember getting so many Emmitt Smiths that I could use them to trade for the next up and coming star, Todd Marinovich. Nice move.

I will not be building complete sets of this. Everything non-variation and insert will be getting tossed out (along with the 65,000 1990 Pro Set cards sitting in my house currently).

I've only ever opened one sealed case in my lifetime - a 1987 Topps 6-box rack case. Opened it back in 1987 with money saved from my job at Baskin Robbins. I was going to get rich - or something, LOL. Had a blast doing it, pulling all the racks with stars showing (Kal Daniels!) and figuring out the sequencing for the various stars.

A couple years later, I bought another sealed case, one that I still have. It was an investment and in another thousand years, it'll be worth what I paid for it. I bought a 1990/91 Pro Set Hockey Series I case. I paid $12/box ($240 for the case) for it at a time when the boxes were trading for $16-$20 apiece. Great deal!

As you can see, picking great sealed cases to buy is not exactly my strong suit. I did have an awful lot of fun opening the Topps case though.
