Thinned out my collection last week.

I have been meaning to make some room and consolidate my cards. Over the course of a week, I went through all of my boxes of raw cards and pulled out the stars and HOFers (70s to present). In the end, I liquidated every common raw card I had. I brought thousands to the Shriners hospital and thousands also went into the trash. So in the end, I have a couple of monster boxes of raw rookies, stars and HOFer. Im going to sell everything in those boxes to fund the set in my sig line. I also have a box of raw baseball from 1952 to 1959 that is being saved.
It feels good to have just a few things left. I feel I will stay focused better. When all is said and done, the only raw cards I will have is the monster box full of 50s cards. The rest of my collection will be graded sets which I will build one set at a time.

Good for you Bob, that was a nice gesture donating the cards to a Hospital like that.

Its a good feeling to get organized & focused, I have gone through a whirlwind of changes over the years and believe Ive now finally gotten to where I have a pretty good direction going forward.
  • cool looking HOF set... looks like fun try to work on.

  • Congrats, one of these days I'll do that!
  • Always nice to shed some dead weight. Good luck with your set.

I recently did the same...I put almost everything graded on eBay starting at .99 and threw away pretty much everything else. I had 3+ 40 gallon trash bags full of straight hockey cards from the 80's through 90's. I have about 50 graded pucks and photos that are boxed away in the basement as I can't bring myself to throw them out... This is all in order to keep a better hold on my collection, focusing on only my 1981 O-Pee-Chee raw, graded, and TTM project, so everything is down to three very small boxes: raw 81's, graded 81's, and "to be graded" along with a few misc. graded cards.

My New Years resolution is to not buy any cards but rather use what I have to grade and send TTM...so far good...but we will see how that goes image

    good job and good luck

I am thinning my collection also. I keep telling myself I should drop the complete set idea altogether but when I'm less than 150 cards away on 5 different sets, that's easier said than done.

Bravo, wish I could do the same. My wife tells me I'm a hoarder, not a collector.

    No focus whatsoever, oh well.

I am contantly doing that. I hate when I accumulate large boxes of 90's commons that are worh $.05 a piece and maybe in 20 years they will be worth $.10. My sister in law works at a safe home for kids so I always give her the cards. She says the kids love going through them.

Have you ever seen the show Hoarders on A & E?
  • This brigns up a good topic... maybe deserves it's own thread, but what's the best way to thin a collection. Ebay store? Bulk Sale? what are your thoughts...

For arguments sake, lets assume the collection is 1970's to present. Commons, Minor Stars, Semi-Stars, Stars, and HoFers. Ungraded too of course.

I've found the best option is trash image

but seriously, a lot of people use "checkoutmycards.com" good way to get 'em out of your way and let someone else do the work of scanning/shipping.

I've seen it, and my wife almost vomits every episode. She is a minimalist, she sorts and rids the house of stuff two-three times a year. Much goes to the community center, the rest to the trash.

What's funny is I probably only have 10-15 (800 ct.) boxes, and a couple of those big plastic storage containers (the under bed style) full of stuff at the house. My real hoard of sets, unopened junk wax, and boxes of 80's stuff is at my parent's house safetly away from her.

I'm more of a hoarder in the sense that I'll buy stuff and keep it just because it looks neat, it normally dosen't fit into what I'm "collecting". I lack focus and would like to try and get some one of these days.

Congrats. It is always nice being focused on things you truly appreciate. Can't go wrong keeping 1950's cards.

I've seen Hoarders before. I dont think there is anything wrong with holding on to things. But, seeing the trash, pet waste, rotten food, and other decaying things is what makes it unbearable to look at. You can have alot of stuff and still keep it neat. Look at Jeff (Barfvader), he has a ton of stuff but it is organized.

Thanks TJ, The 50s box is something I started with my nephew. He took a liking to vintage cards while I built my 1955 Topps set. So, our mission was to fill a monster box of raw low to mid grade cards. I picked up a bunch of lots here and on Ebay. Some board members even donated some cards to help fill it. Its a great assortment of cards with lots of stars and HOFers too. There must be about 150 1952s in there alone. I just picked up a nice 57 Drysdale rookie in PSA 3 from a board member to add to the box. We have alot of fun looking through them. We each take a year and just thumb through them, read the backs and just enjoy ourselves. Its a great way to spend an afternoon!

I try my best. It's a bit out of order since Christmas as some of the empty video game boxes have hit the room but when I can I go in and try and sort through whatever I'm working on at the time (miscuts right now) and do my best to not have it look like a complete disaster.

But I can admit I need to do some purging of some things. image
