Generally speaking there are those that like the shadows. Some will join, others will stay where they are.
<< <i>Paul , I was on the outside for a long time . I saw a number of people that I could easily see being deceitful with few standing up to them. They are now mostly gone .

I hear ya Sonny, it just suprises me that almost every new poster reads but doesnt join up sooner is all.
Like I said I discovered it by accident, and was "seen but less heard" mostly and I figured out soon enough that most guys here are pretty good people.

I can see that Sonny.
When I joined, there were still alot of people posting that were pretty big collectors who've been long gone.
One of the chief mods - Zardoz used to post regularly back then - plus there were some really ingenious fellows like Scumbi - it was kind of intimidating.
My recommendation?

I do read these boards virtually daily. I would like to contribute more, though I find my time limited to.
It is pretty intimidating to join in the postings given the familiarity the regular posters have with each other, as well as the knowledge of cards posessed.
Also, it seems that there is a lot of history about a lot of topics I am inaware of such as "no shirt guy", so I personally find it hard to hop into those conversations.
Having said all that I am sure that I will become a more regular poster as time goes on...

As I said Jean - this place can "appear" intimidating...
I say - jump in and say what's on your mind.
If people do it with dignity - show deference - e.g. I always tend to say "IMO" - and are sincere - people will pick up on that and before ya know it? You're one of the "regulars" that you were alluding to.
On the lurker thing for the record - Perkdog was just messin' around IMO - and in no way was making any kind of value judgement.
I learn from every one who posts.

Right on, Mike! I just have fun reading certain posts and posters. I avoid the sniping threads and focus on the fun and informational ones. I've learned a lot here. "Thanks!" to most everyone who posts here!
<< <i>They probably see how "well" new posters are treated and decide not to post. This place is like a "Good ol' Boys" club if I ever saw one... nothing like inside jokes every other post to get the newbies more involved. lol The gang mentality by the long-timers certainly leaves a lot to be desired. I do like the hobby content here, I guess that's why I keep coming back. >>
I can't necessarily argue with that.
But, you're referring to only a few posters - there's plenty who post here that don't necessarily conside themselves in 'anyone's' group.

That is a fair point to an extent. However I dont think I can ever remember any "New poster" getting made fun of for no reason though, everyone is given a fair chance as far as I can see, its the scammers & liars that get crushed right off the bat after being exposed and the way I see it thats a good thing.
BTW, Mike I dont believe Ive seen you more involved in a thread than you have this one in quite some time!

Got the time - and I now have a laptop in the living room next to the TV!
I'm a member of only one other sports memorabilia message board and the lingo here is very different so I was trying to get accustomed to everything. I wouldn't want to come over here and make a fool of myself, like getting to 50 posts and calling out senior members or anything...

<< <i>I was a lurker myself for awhile before I joined. I finally started posting frequently after I realized that the people that tended to look like they were having a bad time, were the people that "took the bait" that someone set out for them. It takes at least two to argue (unless you argue with yourself or an imaginery friend), so if you don't "take the bait", it's a lotta fun. I've gone from lurker to over 3,000 posts and I either have had to have a really, really bad day at work before I "take the bait", or else someone writes negatively about my beloved IRISH.
Mike >>
I hear ya Mike.
I make it a rule not to post when I had a bad day.
Plus, I think and reread before I hit the reply - on a larger post, I hit the PREVIEW beforehand.
I've reworded many things after reviewing what I was about to say.

I think lurkers are fine. If I can contribute to the hobby and to their enjoyment, maybe teach them something they didn't know, that's a bonus for me. If they are more comfortable just sitting back in the shadows, reading and taking it all in, that's cool. Do what makes you happy.
And I think this thread has a good intention behind it, Perk is just saying "We don't bite!"

HA!
Funny you mention that. I remember you showed up just as poop was hitting the fan. I, along with many others, were extremely skeptical of you at first but as time went on, you were totally welcomed into the family.
<< <i>And I think this thread has a good intention behind it, Perk is just saying "We don't bite!" >>
Absolutely Correct!
Hey everyone is different and people should by all means do what they feel is good for them, however I hate to think someone is just reading and not joining up because they feel they dont have much to add.

I cannot prove it, but I really doubt many lurkers fail to post
due to any maltreatment of new posters here by "regulars."
Any razzing of new guys appears to be largely in fun. Some
folks here kid hard, but there is not much meanness in the
teasing.
The CU forums boast 30K+ members. Some like to post,
some like to read; we need both groups.
<< <i>I joined this board in late 2004, I had just turned 17. I'm 22 and about to graduate college in 4 months now! I've literally grown up on this board, and have learned a lot about not only collectibles but life. I consider many of the folks on this board to be mentors, and great friends.

I'm almost exactly the same (except I'm only a freshman haha). I think back to some things I posted before and I was just immature and stupid, or almost trying to impress people on here or something.
I remember when I first joined I was almost afraid to admit I was a Devil Rays fan, and just kind of put up the Braves thing because I figured guys would give me crap for being a Devil Rays fan (I'm more of a Chipper Jones fan than a Braves fan, but cheered for them as a result). I don't want to go too off topic, but it was all because this place can be kind of intimidating, especially for a 16 year old.
If you want to know more of my "fanhood", pm me haha.

And some do a great job of level-headed, unemotional advising.
That of course would be you, storm. And 30K+ members really appreciate you!

I'd actually thought you probably had a similar story before I made my post, Goot.
