1989 Upper Deck question.

I used to own a factory sealed set of 89 UD. It was in a shrink wrapped carton. I have also seen some factory sealed sets with a sticker used to seal the carton. Does anyone know why this was done? I was curious to see if there was a reason why they used two different methods.

Back in 1989, my brother-in-law did a few card shows on the side. He had the ones with the sticker. I ordered a set for myself from one of the mail-order card shops, and it came in the shrink wrap.

I think the first factory sets out the door had the sticker, while later ones had the shrink wrap.

I remember buying an unopened case of the sets back in '89 and they came with the sticker as well.

That would be correct. And I have had to argue that point since 1989 with some local individuals.

  • By the time 89 UD was finally released, the hype around the Griffey rookie was already in full force. The factory sets were originally released with just the clear sticker. Problem was that many unscrupulous dealers were peeling back the sticker and removing the Griffey and resealing the set. After enough complaints, UD went to the cellophane.
  • The first factory sets had the sticker, then came the completely sealed sets. This is fact.
