I went today with a friend who is a big Mattingly fan (Donnie was signing).
It was more crowded than I've seen in years. I attribute all this to Mattingly. A huge line for hours. He was polite and took pics with everyone (interesting, in TX next week, they're charging for pics.)
John The Count Montefusco was free. Nice guy. I asked who was his toughest out was and he said Reggie Smith and told a funny story.
I live very close -- 6 miles -- so I pick and choose my pick ups. The guy behind me on line drove 3 1/2 hours to the show, and he was putting together a 69 football set, and had a bag full of goodies.
I got some nice raw Mets for my collection, as well as some 72 commons. Got some cheap-y slabbed cards for the nephews.
I went. I live about 1.2 hours away and I was a bit disappointed. It was very crowded and the dealers were not very friendly. I am looking to complete a 2004 Upper Deck Yankee Signature set and one dealer had one that I needed with a $25 price. I had the guide and the price was $10 in near mint condition. When I asked him if he could do better he told me that the industry uses Beckett as a guide and not the Standard catalog of Baseball cards for prices. I told him that I will give him book value ($10) and he instantly took it. I cold of done without the attitude. I was showing another person some of my cards and he took one and put it in his bag. When I asked what he was doing he said "sorry, I made a mistake." I did pick up some commons that I needed for my Topps Yankee team sets from the 50's and 60's.
Besides those two bad experiences I just mentioned above I did complete some of my Yankee team sets. I now have every Yankee card put out by Topps base sets from 1970-1993. I am only missing 13 cards to finish the sets to 2009 and only 68 more to finish up the 1960's. Good news is that I have all of the expensive ones from the 60's. What is killing me are the $15 high number cards of Joe Benchwarmer and Andy Isanobody.

Some douchebag that you were chatting with and showing your cards to just took one and put in his bag? Then said he made a mistake? Am I reading that right? He's lucky he didnt get a fist to his teeth! Pretty ballsy.
That is exactly what happened. We were going to make a trade. I was going to give him a Very nice condition raw 1969 Topps Nolan Ryan (probably would of graded a PSA 7 or 8) and a raw nice shape 1888 Allen and Ginter Beach oarsman card for his nice shape raw 1954 Topps Yogi Berra. It would of been a fair deal for both of us. He was going to do it but changed his mind. No problem, It was a touch decision and I understand backing out but he slipped the Allen and Ginter card in his bag before giving me back the Nolan Ryan. It could of been a mistake but the look on his face told me that it was a bad slight of hand. I might of been suckered by it with all the activity going on if I were younger and if I did not have my friend standing right next to me.
Living in Upstate NY it sucks that there are no decent card shows to go to . Just cant see driving 4 or 5 hours for a card show just to come home empty handed. There are a few card shows in Albany , but thats still 2 hours away.
A collector of all things Braves Always looking for Chipper Jones cards. Im a very focused collector of cards from 1909 - 2012...LOL
Is that one of those Gloria Rothstein shows or something like that?
I've never attended that show - while stationed in NYC, I used to go to the Hofstra show and the one at the Nassau coliseum - in 1993, I went with my son to get a something signed by Mantle and he was sold out - was very disappointed - back then he was signing for around 70 bucks.

She promoted shows in the 90s -- same place -- I think she's out of business. This same group also does Hofstra, check out nyshows.org >>
She passed away a couple years ago >>
And I believe her son took over for a while. Not sure if he still does them.
STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Since were on the topic of east coast shows, does anyone know what happened to the Football Spectacular i believe it was called. I know it was held at the Raritan Expo Center in Edison NJ . . I got some of my best IP Cowboy auto material there . They had an unbelievable signing lineup every year . . I know they cancelled the 09 show and was hoping they'd come back for this years but it dosen't look like they will
Collector of anything and everything of the Dallas Cowboys
