Ripken for group sub - Pick one or all !!!

Thinking of sending in a Ripken on the group sub.

Which one of these would you send and what grade or grades do you think they would get ?

The one with the most votes goes.

I'll let everyone know the results when received back.

Pulled from vending years ago.

Thanks in advance helping me decide.

So far I guess they all go.

What grades do you think they'll pull !!!

  • 1st -- Don't like the bottom right corner looks touched (My Guess will pull an 8)
2nd -- Looks like some chipping on the bottom under Topps
3rd -- Top Left looks touched.. (my Guess will pull an 8)

I would think they all should pull an 8.

All three have great centering but all three have a red spot in the upper left corner of Schneider, a blue spot on Cal's chin, and a print spot in the M. Guess it depends on how good a mood they're in as to how much they'll penalize for that. Edges on two don't look as good as 1 and 3. At under $5, I'd go all three too.

    Sub 'em all! image

My guess is they'll all come back 7s... they can be pretty tough on this card. Just ask Bill!

Didn't notice the chipping on # 2 (middle card) Thanks.

Think I'll pull that one unless people think it will still get an 8.

They all came from the same vending run so I guess the consistant marks make sense.

That's why multiple eyes are better.

Thought the centering on all was nice.

    Thanks all.

Sub them all, those are great cards. I think the first will grade the highest. Good luck!

Craig .. nice centering, I agree. At less than $5 per, I'd sub all three. However, the only one that I think has any shot at a "9" would be the 3rd one. And the way they grade this darn card, I think that is still going to be tough.

ANYWAY, I say the best grade will be #3, followed by #1 and then #2.

    GOOD LUCK!

sub all! Give the grader more than one example of each.

I got a 9 on the last one of these I subbed (November special) and I thought the best it would do was an 8, so I'd definitely sub all of them.
  • I didn't look too closelythe first time. Since all 3 have identical minor print defects, I would on ly sub the one that you think is in the best condition. If you send all 3 together, the grader will definitely notice and you may end up with all 3 with qualifiers or mid-range grades.

I found the pic of the one I subbed that got a 9 for comparison.

Can you tell me exactly what is a "group sub", and how do you get grading for under $5? Thanks.

This is why I usually purchase already graded cards. When I looked at the three cards it was a no brainer. #2 is by far the best of the three.

    Wow !!! That got a 9 !!

The mark by Cal is far more noticeable and detracting on yours. IMHO.

I think all of mine look nicer. Again IMHO.

I'm just worried if they all get subbed the hidden dots may stand a chance of getting them all knocked down.

I sure would like to see this card in a 9 holder, can't see
how that dot would slide by.I would send the 3rd. if your only going
to send one,but again for $5 bucks each,I'd sub all 3.

I sold it to board member bporter26 for less than VCP average shipped. If he has a scan he can share.

and to be fair, it did have perfect centering and corners.

I agree the centering is great.
Meant no disrespect. I just can't take my eyes off the dot by Cal.

One fisheye that doesn't detract from the overall esthetics of the card - which otherwise is a 9 will remain a 9 IMO.

But, I can see how some might not like them - to me they're just part of the 'charm' that is a baseball card.

edit: also rought cuts that appear in the form of edge chipping that doesn't affect the corner will also be overlooked when determining a grade from what I understand.
