1990 Leaf Sammy Sosa

I just got back this card from PSA and it got a 9. I was shocked when I lloked at the registry to see that this card has far more submissions than any of Sosa's other rookies. I can't believe that this is his highest priced rookie.

Meanwhile, I picked up this set in a lot a while back, 6 months ago, before I found this board and could share with anyone, so I will inform now. For $150 I got 82-89 Topps sets, with every traded set, and this 1990 Leaf. The condition of all the stars were awesome however some of the centering was off especially on the 82 Ripkins'. I thought then and still do that it was a pretty sweet deal.

Back to the Sosa...why would this be the highest priced as it doesn't seem the quantity was much less. Thoughts?

1990 Leaf was just an awesome set. image I always thought of it as the little brother to UD. A very high end product that came out just a year after UD shocked the hobby.
  • Set popularity definately fuels the value of this card. Also, keep in mind, while there may be more submissions of this card, the print run if this issue is smaller than the other '90 sets. There will be unopened '90 Donruss, Fleer, and Topps for decades to come while the unopened 1990 Leaf material is drying up. Those numbers are probably a little skewed as well. I wonder how many were submitted, came back less than desired, cracked, sold raw, and resubmitted by the new owner. Probably quite a few seeing as how popular this card/set is. image

For 1990, the Leaf is considered the "premium" RC card even tho there are more of them than would be needed.
I bought Sosa 90L's for a buck in 1993 - back then guys selling in SCD had boatloads of RC's to dump.
Wish I had bought a 1000 - would have dumped them when Sosa hit 66 HRs!

The 1990 Leaf also had a tendency to have very soft corners. PSA 10's are great if you can get them.

PSA considers 90 Leaf to be THE Sosa rookie, at least in the 500 HR Club registry. I assume it will be the same for the HOF Rookies set.

PSA 10 will set you back $150 or so, which amazingly is also what SMR says.

Ever stopped to think that it's Sammy's most submitted rookie because it's his most valuable?

You sure are friendly! I was simply making an observation. If you look at a 1977 Topps Mexican Steve Largent Rookie, it is far more valuable than his 1977 Topps and yet there are far less submissions of the Mexican, even though its more valuable. Hmmmmm

  • Terrible analogy. Largent's Mexican is his most valuable becuase it is tough as hell to find. Sosa's Leaf is his most valuable because it's his most popular.

For the record, his Bowman Tiffany is a lot more valuable than the Leaf these days. While Beckett doesn't consider it an RC for some reason, it sells for 2-4x what the Leaf does.

This topic reminds of the day when everyone was chasing RC's in stacks/bricks of 50 or more. I am going to eventually put them all together and report on how many guys I "speculated" on in the early 90's.

Tops on my list: Brien Taylor, Cal Eldred, Pete Incaviglia, Jay Buhner, Tom Glavine e.g.

I no longer do any of that kind of stuff - some winners - still to date - Griffey, Thomas, Bonds and Sosa.

Al most five years later and Current January 2010 Smr listed the 1990 Leaf #220 Sammy Sosa Psa 9 =$18 ebay average around $7 bucks or less and psa 10 = $30 ebay average around $20-$25 sometimes a little less with combined shipping sellers. Does anyone remember the estimated total psa 10 pop back in 2005 when this card was bringing in the coin?

Tom Glavine is a future HOFer, so you should be rolling in the dough with that stack of his RC's, right? image

one of my fav sets! I still have about 10 that I put together ripping open packs. Also one of my 1st BIG purchases. I picked up a '90 Leaf II case with Thomas in it. Paid $500...thought I was a bigtime dealer when I sold it to Murphy for $1,500 in the late '90s. Thank God I dumped it!!

I also recall trying to buy a Sosa Leaf rookie in PSA-10. Offered the dude $700...amazingly he said no! Thank God he did!!!

was a time people, what a time.......could bust up 90 Leaf all day long for #300 Frank Thomas, and at the prime point of interest of the set DEALERS were openly offering up to 50 bucks a piece for that card in raw form, we flipped 'em by the 100's......for awhile, it was all i asked for when folks would call and offer up a collection for sale......"Got any 90 Leaf?????"....."Nope, just 55 Topps."

    "Aw." image

still keep a few of those around, they're nice to look at.......Thanks Frank for putting the food on my plate. image

I recall the guy saying that he was looking for $1,000 or more for the Thomas. Sadly, he probably got it.
