Results of 71 Set Break

Did any of you follow apple383's 71 set break on ebay? It was a very nice set-none were worse than PSA 8. I managed to get a couple of stars, plus a few high pop commons, for decent (i.e., around VCP average) prices. Many of the commons I was interested in went for well above VCP. An 8.5 Clemente (the 1st) went for more than $800. Raymond and Munson went for just over $1000. Card #464 pulled up the rear at $4.28. Every card was sold. Some of the low pops went for a reasonable price.

Mark ... are you putting the set together? Glad you got some low pop commons out of it!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • Mark, didn't see the auction, congrats on your pickups. I'm sure it was a very well attended auction. Just for interest, what did the Ryan go for and was it a "8"?

I'm working on it. I'm at about 75%-mostly 8s, but several 7s. The commons I bought were high pops, unfortunately. I like to get several at a time to save on shipping. I did pick up Jackson and Rose. The Rose was a little high, but the centering is outstanding.

I picked up 6 cards in total. Bidding was stronger than I expected.

If I did the math right, all 752 cards went for a total of $29,920. Total ebay fees will be about $1858, for a net of $28,062 (before paypal fees).

This compares to a full set (Felicia's I think) that sold in a single auction the week before $22,600.
  • Have to deduct about $3500 in shipping fees.

The Ryan was an 8, and it went for $237.

Five bucks a card shipping? Wow.

I picked up 68 of his 8's this week, Mark. I couldn't control myself.
  • As a long time big fan of the 71 set, this is a very interesting result. I think it really demonstrates the tough cards for this set- the Raymond card is far and away the toughest. The Munson is also tough and and with the high demand for that iconic card, a high price can always be expected. The cards that apple383 auctioned seem generally to be solid for their grades. A great set- I love it!

Personally, I think he left money on the table, I was watching three of the cards being auctioned by Apple383 and ultimately decided to NOT bid on any of the three cards because I thought the scans sucked! When I am going to shell out good money for HOFers in PSA 8 or better, especially with that set, I want to a nice large clean scan.

68! That's a lot of cards and coin. I won 15 or so, 12 in the $9-12 range, one $20 card, and the two stars. I was the underbidder on a ton, but then I was trolling for cheap commons.
  • Big difference in the set Felicia sold and the one that was recently broke. Felicia had a couple of 9's mostly high pop, while this lastest one had HOF 8.5's and 9's.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.
