When cracking a slab, is it good etiquette to inform PSA?

It would make the pop report more accurate, no? I'm about to crack a T205.

  • Excellent question and I'm glad that you care.

Yes, it is good to inform PSA. One way of doing this that many have found successful is: anonymously send in the older flip* from the crackout after the card is graded in its new slab. In the past, PSA has often then deducted the old flip once received.

That's excellent etiquette and helps maintain the accuracy of the POP reports for all.

*For newer readers - the "flip" is the little piece of paper at the top of the holder with the card name and grade on it.
  • I sent back about 10 flips with my last order. Just make sure if you send it with a sub that you don't include a card that matches one of the flips.

I was thinking more along the lines of cracking it out and leaving it raw (like the rest of my T205s). Maybe take a picture of the broken flip and send that to Cosetta?

they require the actual flip in hand...

I sent a couple in and they didn't remove them..
one was an 8.5 ( highest ever graded) that I cracked and got the 9
but the 8 stayed on the report for a long time.. I had to email
them a few times and let them know it was important the 8.5 be deleted.
I sent scans of both cards in the slab.. and they finally deleted it.. I believe they said they had to run it by Joe...
they couldn't just delete it without having it. but you can only send it to em once.. once they have it it is at their mercy..
anyway, they made it right and updated the pop report. now I have the one and only psa 9 with the next being a 7 or something.

I'll go one step further - what about flips from other grading companies (BVG/BGS, SGC, PRO image) when you crack their slabs for a PSA sub?

Shouldn't you let them know that their pop reports will need to be updated too?

Just wondering since I've never cracked before - so I don't know what the proper procedure is.

the pop report only tells us how many times a professional grader graded a card and what the grade is. the pop report is not a big deal.

the problem with the pop report is in name only. it shouldn't be called a "population" report, as there is no way at all to monitor the true population....you can't even give an approximate population...because of this psa should call it something like the "graded" report.

    it's all in the wording.

I once asked the question (sent emails to all of the companies) of PSA, BGS, GAI, and SGC.
Everyone replied that if you sent back their flips, they would remove them from the population report...

...With the exception of BGS. They said they didn't care, and even if you sent the flip back, the population report was going to stay the way it is and they will not change it.

That, along with a number of other things, lead me to make the choice of PSA.

They used to at shows. I'm hanging on to mine until this is done again.
