Curious about the strike/grade of his half penny

Curious because I'm not familiar enough with the series to judge whether this obviously weak
strike is more or less typical or not for the date.

Very weak at the high points; head, hand and breast of Brittainia.

TOO weak and a poor example or not?

Thanks for any help, comments....

  • Hi it looks perfectly ok, it appears cleaned at some time, hold it long enough on a "ok plank" and in about 10 years it will be beautifully toned

Looks like a strong strike to me.

The shield and majority of Britannia look quite well struck, so the weakness to the head is probably a filled die - quite common on 18th century copper. There appears to be some pitting, particularly on the shaft and shield and looks as if it could have been cleaned. Possibly these two are related. The flan depressions(?) by B are a little odd (possible corrosion) and so I wonder if it could be a dug piece. I would want to see it in the hand before making a decision, but it isn't a bad example. What is the obverse like?
  • Thanks so much fellows. I do recognize that I'm getting some expert opinions and comments here
and I very much appreciate it.

Here's the obverse. If anyone would care to comment on the possible grade range I'd appreciate that too.

    Thanks again....

Does the obverse strike/appearance change or reinforce your opinion?

Reinforces my opinion. The rough surface here is in keeping with the pitting on the reverse. It still looks cleaned.

I agree that is an ok strike, you often see the 1773 with a completely flat head on Britannia.
