Clay Matthews RC?

Does anyone know what is the rookie card of Clay Matthews or the most desired card? Thanks.

  • These days the Exquisite auto/patches are usually the most desired RC of anybody, but I'd go with SP Authentic auto/patch or Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket auto to avoid breaking the bank.

Keep in mind none of these products are available yet. The card companies in their infinite wisdom have decided to release the crap that doesn't sell during the season, then the stuff that is guaranteed to sell out at the end of the year. I think everything decent becomes available in January.

Thanks. So stuff like SPX auto is not as good (in your opinion) as sp auto? One last thing will all those you mentioned be coming out since, I think Upper Deck holes FB rights now? Thanks.

  • I believe they are all still being made, but not positive. Some people prefer the SPX to SP Authentic, so it's kind of a toss-up between those two. I've always liked SP Authentic better but that's just me. Matthews should be cheap enough where you can pick up both for under $75 combined, but don't quote me on that.

Which raises the question..........Are the cards released after a players rookie season really "rookies" since they had cards available much earlier?

In 1999, Pacific had the only Kurt Warner rookie released during the season and it was selling in the $50 range. Then Playoff Contenders and a few others came out and the Pacific plummeted. Now, the Contenders is considered his best rookie card, so the answer to your question would be 'yes' according to the collecting community. Basically, no one cares when the cards were released as long as they carry the same year designation.

That's another reason the companies release their good products late- in case they miss a good rookie in their base products they can include them in the premium stuff and sell more.

You should also keep in mind that if you are looking for his best rookie card as far as PSA set registries are concerned, the card will not be an auto or jersey patch and it's print run will have to be /999 or greater. Usually this means regular SP Authentic or Topps Chrome.

wouldnt a rookie card be the players first issued card, whether or not that happened to be in the players rookie year. if not how can a 55T be Don Hutson's RC??? his career was over already. i would love you to tell JasP that those 55's need to be pulled from the HOF RC set.

Thats exactly my point......First card = Rookie card
If the cards come out after the players rookie year, why are those considered rookies? I Dont know but there are alot of controversial rookie card selections in the HOF RC set and future HOF RC set. The "rules" that have to be followed are ridiculous.
I've often wondered why the cut-off for card inclusion is 999 and not 1000? Is it because the Topps chrome Rookies are numbered to 999? I could go on and on, but i digress......

All I've busted this year was Finest, Bowman Chrome & Upper Deck... putting together raw sets of the last two. I believe he was only in Upper Deck... maybe Finest, but I don't believe so. Definitely looking forward to see what new releases he'll be in that are yet to come out!

Got this beauty (currently POP 1... will probably be POP 30+ in a matter of months if he get's ROY) back on my last sub!!!

Had to do a little research (in preparation for my eBay search too!)... and found

He does not have a card in 2009 UD SP Signature Edition image

He does have a card in the following latest UD releases... i'm guessing the SPx to be most desirable (no word yet on SP Authentic & Ultimate Collection which come out in late January)
    - 2009 SPx 132 CLAY MATTHEWS ROOKIE SIGNATURES AU
    - 2009 UD BLACK 111 CLAY MATTHEWS AUTOGRAPH

I just looked on the bay and there seems to be a lot of different so called "rookie" cards for him. This is one reason I like vintage football more.

I think we went over this a few times on the HOF RC thread already. But if you want to know which cards qualify as a players official "Rookie card", you need to purchase the Beckett Ultimate Rookie Card Encyclopedia. PSA decided over a year ago that they will henceforth ONLY use cards designated by Beckett as a TRUE ROOKIE card in all rookie card sets.

If you look up Don Hutson is says "1955 Topps All-American".. So if you have issues or complaints on what exactly makes a card a rookie card or not, at this point, you'll have to take it up with Beckett.

For the individual numbering, PSA has NEVER AGREED to a specific number. We as collectors have voted for specific cards to be added, and thus far the lowest is /999 of the 2001 Topps Chrome. Since this issue really only affect the HOF and Key Card sets, my personal opinion is that any lower and you run the risk of adding a card in which at some point in time will not be able to be collected by all Registered set members. What if PSA allowed a card individually number to /100 to the HOF RC set? With over 100 collectors, it would be impossible for everyone to reach 100% on the set. PSA will never do this. For me personally, I will never vote for anything lower than /999.

For the autographed cards, PSA has created separate sets made specifically for ONLY autographed cards if you are interested in collecting those.

Just saw the thread and figured i would set the record straight on these issues that I have been involved with in the past.

LOL..You can tell me all day long, but PSA has already made the call on ALL the cards currently registered on the HOF RC set. I made sure they did this after the changes from a couple of years ago...It's listed on the front page of the set list.

"Notes: This set requires specific cards. There will be no additions or deletions to the list of cards required, which can be viewed on the Set Composition page."

Where did you get this definition? Is this just your opinion? Who decides this? Because PSA says Beckett decides and that CLEARLY is not their definition.

Do you have another source who defines rookie card as first card, no questions or stipulations?

    Jason,

I was just having a little fun. I am sure that he has no plans (nor do I) for altering the HOF RC set.

Seriously though, I watched the Packer game a couple weeks ago and Matthews was all over the place! He's a great player with a very bright future.

Yeah I know..It's all good. There are others on this thread who may not be aware of the issues so thought it would be helpful to re-post.

I don't think any of us have plans for altering the HOF RC set, because none of us here are employed by the Registry staff and have that ability. I'm just passing along the good word, as anyone can e-mail PSA and request changes, but luckily we (all of us who collect it) now know that no changes will be made.

A little off-topic, but I think you'll be interested: Clay from the Packers is actually Clay III. Here's grandpa Clay Sr., who played for the 49ers.
