1989 fleer Randy Johnson Black Background?

Just picked up a lot of PSA cards and 1 was a 1989 Fleer Randy Johnson black background. Are they rare? What are they worth? Thanks

Very, very common. The 1989 Fleer Randy Johnson cards with a full Marlboro ad billboard are quite valuable...yours is the common variety.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I have about 100 of the RJ's with the black background. There are a few variations that have the black box and total blackout but PSA only recognizes the full blackout, ad partially obscured and full ad.

Here's a few variations to gaze upon:

Would you be interested in trading one of the Marlboro versions?

  • I wish more of the variations were recognized. I have about 6 different versions. The guy is a Hall of Famer, so it's not like it's some common. Some are very rare compared to the other variations.

I have the one where he is smoking a cigar. How rare is this variation?

I have one where he's smoking a cigar and somebody wrote "Rick Face" on the side of it. image
  • Here's another Marlboro (not mine) that's pretty hard to get. Heard of it and never knew it existed until my buddy picked one up from ebay. All the ones I see are darker. Photo was not altered.

It's in this Thread 2nd pic down.

    Black box
    Partial black box
    Partial red box
    Light red box, Marlboro readable
    Marlboro clearly shown

    STOLEN FROM EBAY REVIEW:

This guide describes the several different variations of the 1989 Fleer Randy Johnson #381.

    1. The first printing of the card shows a red and white Marlboro billboard, complete with Marlboro man, behind Randy's left ear in the background.

    2. The second printing still has the entire billboard visible, but dark, reddish shading/shadowing covers Marlboro and the red and white of the sign. Very noticable next to the first printing. Entire sign is still COMPLETELY visible despite shading.

    3. The next version still has the sign visible, but there's a black line through the middle of the word Marlboro with the tops of all letters in Marlboro still clearly visible.(you can still tell the sign says Marlboro)

    4. This version still shows the red and white of the sign, but there is a black blob where the word Marlboro once was, no longer showing tops of letters.

    5. The Marlboro sign is completely gone, but a black rectangle, exactly in the shape of the Marlboro billboard, CLEARLY sticks out from the rest of the black background.

    6. The most common "corrected" version. There is absolutely no trace of the Marlboro sign ever being there at all.

I have seen all for sale on Ebay at one point in time or another. I have personally opened 10+ boxes that included the full, obscene Ripken FFace error that had the fully "corrected" Randy Johnson card. We all know how early they pulled the Ripken which shows in comparison how scarce all of the different Johnson versions really are.

As of now, PSA only recognizes both of these as "Marlboro Ad on Scoreboard"

One that eBay does not mention in it's review, unless I just misread it, is the top left one in the scan below. The ad is covered with the black box except for a small circle in the top middle of the sign that exposes part of the word "Marlboro".

  • There is also one like mine, which appears to be Bills bottom left, but shows the Marlboro man much clearer.
