Cubs Team Cards

Something I've wondered all my life is why the majority of the Cubs team cards from the 1970's were pieced together individual photos rather than a normal team photo. Specifically, from 1971-1981, every year except 1973 and 1975 features one of these cobbled together team cards. I don't recall any other team having them this way with any regularity.

Also, on an unrelated note, anyone know why there is no Rusty Staub card from 1972 or 1973?

    Hi Paul

My guess? he did not sign the contract. He is in the 73 set (in the backround of an in action card)

I've read that the Cubs sometimes didn't release a team photo, so Topps had to use "floating heads." The 1975 White Sox card is like that too. Perhaps there are others.
  • Now the real reason why they haven't won the series in 100 years. Curse of the "pieced together team photos". I think we've gotten to the bottom of it.

As someone who went to Wrigley Field on a regular basis during the 70's AND was a card collector, I always thought it was odd that Topps used the team photo that they sold at Wrigley on the team cards. These photos you see on the team cards were almost always the team photos sold at the ballpark. Can you imagine having a Topps employee buting a team photo at the souvenir stand for the regular Topps issue card??
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

I think they probably did that with most, if not all teams. I have all the large Padres team photos from 1969 - 1998, that the team gave away and/or sold, and the Topps team cards are identical to them.

I know the 76 Chicago Black Hawks team card is the floating head kind.
