PSA 10 "Rule of Thumb"?

Is there any unofficial guideline for finding the value of non-listed PSA 10's?

Ive been eyeing the card for a while but dont want to overpay too much. Its early 70's, the 9 SMR is 150, seller is wanting 250 for a 10, HOFer.
There are 9 tens in the pop report. Seems fair?

Thanks for any advice.

I think it seems fair...if you want, I can check VCP to see what they have been selling for...

I would need to know what the 9's actually sell for, NOT what the SMR says they are.

I'd also need to know who the player is. Is it a Bruce Sutter type Hall of Famer or a Willie Mays type?

So, no I don't think a 'rule of thumb' applies when applying a value from 9 to 10.

    Too many variables.

    give 'er

EDIT: just read the above post and realized the psa 9 price was smr not reality, check reality.
  • Sounds fair. Every set is different, but a HOF PSA 10, should at least be worth 2x, the same in PSA 9, for basic Topps sets. As you appear really interested in the card, I would go for it.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

I don't know of any tried-and-true PSA 10 rules of thumb...

But I do know what good general rule of thumb... If you can live with the purchase amount, and you feel it is fair... then that is all that really matters!

For a HOFer Pop 9 border-line vintage PSA 10 card... I'd assume $250 is probably fair, or close enough to fair to leave it up to a personal judgment call

Also, how many registry sets are there of that HOFer, and how many of those have that card in a 10?

The closest card on eBay I've seen to what he describes is a 1972 Topps #270 Jim Palmer in PSA 10 which 4SC is auctioning (not a buy it now) with a starting price of $250. The 1972 Jim Palmer has a population of ten PSA 10's (he says the card he wants has nine PSA 10s) and the SMR for it in PSA 9 is $140 (he says the card he wants has an SMR of $150 in PSA 9).

If (a big if) that is the card he is referencing, the reality price of a 1972 Topps #270 Jim Palmer in PSA 9 is between $60 and $80. The last sale I remember for a PSA 10 was at the beginning of 2009 for $300+.

    Edited for spelling.

If I was right about what card it is. It was really just my best guess.

    Did you use a Guess-A-Sketch?
  • nam.... your sleuth skills are truely, 2nd to none. I read this at work and wanted to reply right away, but the firewall keeps us from posting.

the 72 Palmer is the one, although it was at one point a BIN, not for auction, not sure when it changed.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback.
