Any suggestions on best way to sell expensive card? (UPDATE: SOLD 12/21/09))

Hi all, hitting a really rough spot and am going to let go of my 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson PSA 5.

Any suggestions on my best strategy? I am thinking the options are these:

eBay: Start it out a little high, with best offer option.
eBay: Start is low and let it get what it gets
Sell it on here or another board

Also, anybody know the current SMR on this? Bought it about 5 years ago for $650.

I would first try the BST here.

Then, I would do a BIN w/bo on EBAY.

first get VCP.......next try B/S/T....third BIN/BO.....last resort auction (starting at the lowest you would be ok with it selling for)

Forget SMR what you need is the VCP average.

I don't have a subscription but I'm sure someone does and will chime in.

I don't know your Ebay reputation (not saying it is bad) simply wondering how good it is.

If it is good and you have somewhat of a following I'd put it up on ebay and price it depending

on what it looks like. If it is high end I'd start it at a little more than the VCP average

and see how it does on the bay. The money you pay in fees is worth the extra exposure IMO.

Another avenue is of course the B/S/T forum here.

FWIW in the SMR it is an 800.00 card in 5 I believe and 1350 in 6.

Remember all 5's are not created equally so depending on what it looks like will tell prospective buyers what they

will/would be willing to pay.

You should get $900 to $1,100 for it.

If you list it on eBay, make sure it is one of the first 5 you list that month because on the first 5 auctions each month (as long as they qualify per eBays guidelines for auctions of this type) the eBay final value fees are 8.75% or $20, whichever is lower. To take full advantage of this type of listing you should only sell something that will have a final price of $228.58 or greater. Anything less is wasting 5 opportunities to sell high dollar items.

Yep that was what I was thinking Nick, but we need a scan to see where it fits on the scale of 5's.

Could be a NQ 7OC, could be a honest wear true 5, could be a card that presents well with a wrinkle on the back.

Could be a lot of things I suppose.

eBay (if you have good feedback) with good pics of both front and back, in the right category with a $9.99 starting bid, no reserve.

Its not a rare or unusual card, so will get what its worth, as long as its placed in the right catagory.

Personally that is what I'd do, I'm not sure if Jason is willing

to start it 9.99 and watch it sit at 10.49 all week until the last 3 minutes of the auction

where it in all probability it would reach market, The only way I wouldn't put this card up on ebay

and start it at 9.99 is if I had just ended a hiatus from ebay. Feedback is key here.

It takes some (fill in the blank) to start a 800-1000 dollar card at 9.99.

A strong card could fetch 1300, But the last two were sold closer to 900. Considering your situation, here are the 2009 sales info. VCP is a good service and I paid a pretty penny to renew but if you have more cards to sell, you should subscribe . Ebay will also show all completed sales for no charge as an advanced search.... Good luck with your sale.

PS: Sorry to hear about your "rough spot." I think, or hope, I just got over mine....I think I will call it 2009. Worst year I have ever had....but that's alright. Can't be on top all the time and I'm trying to stick with my new theory in life.....everything looks better in Legos.

Thanks for that! Yeah, I would say 2009 has been pretty much my worst year ever too. Thank god for my family. I have a wonderful wife and 3 great boys (1,3, and 6) Just trying to hang on to everything we have built in our lives. Tough times remind us what is important. Hope 2010 is better.

I just packaged up my Robinson and will be sending it off tomorrow. I am happy that I was able to sell it, but seeing it leave sucks. Some day I hope to be in a better place financially and be able to get another. My display case looks strange to me without it.

Thanks to everyone on here with the suggestions on how to sell it.

Ended up selling it to somebody on here. They were able to use the BING cash back so they got a good price and I got about what i needed to.

Nice to see that you sold the card and it found a good home with a board member. When it comes between pieces of cardboard and supporting your family, family always comes first. In reality if you are in a tough situation, it probably makes sense dumping most of your collection, as you will enjoy reobtaining the cards that much more when you are back in a good place financially.
