A '61 Type B MS64 in PCGS plastic (attributed) went for $175 recently, here

ProofArtwork....the colors on that '63 unattributed in NGC plastic that sold on the 22nd are extremely nice.

At midnight on the evening of Dec $, I checked eBay for Washington quarter - type B offerings.
I found 51 which is a lot higher than it used to be. 43 were BIN, 3 had bids pending and 5 had no bids at that moment which probably means nothing.

So far 5 have finished
1957 6 Dec 16:03 raw gem unc $39 + $2.50 S&H
1958 6 Dec 16:02 raw gem unc $36 + $2.50
1959 6 Dec 16:01 raw gem unc $36 + $2.50
1962 5 Dec 18:00 raw circulated $2.03 + $2.50 (may be artificially high after I put a bid on it)

A '64 PCGS MS64 Type B (attributed) went for $175 on ebay, earlier today.

Perhaps MS66 isn't necessarily THE 'money grade'. Perhaps it's the BIG money grade, but for a few years ('56, '62), MS64 seems to be a 'good' money grade (for now), MS65 a 'better' money grade. Even the '61 in MS65, regardless of the 2 just made in MS66, is a good money grade. If the masses are going to pay that kind of money for MS64's now....it bodes well, though those kinds of bids/purchases are only going to be found in PCGS attributed holders.

I agree with Lee to a certain point, that, RAW, those prices are way too much, as most of the nicest of the raw ones won't grade any better than MS64, if that high.

I was going to disagree, but after further reflection I agree. Most every person that I know that have these has some connection to the forum.

Yet over the last 46 years since the earliest Coin World article that I know of, I think some small fry have been quietly cherrypicking these.

An eBay item of a 1960 PCGS MS 64 attributed finished tonight at $36 + 1.58 S&H.

Within the last month alone I auctioned two raw 1956 Type B and extended a Second Chance Offer to an underbidder that was beaten out by a dollar, on a 3rd.
I opened bidding at $75 and all 3 sold in the $90 range. Everyone that got these absolutely loved them as evidenced by the feedback they left AND I did this with
the customary 7 day no questions asked money back Guarantee.

I was up front regarding what I felt they would realistically grade out at and provided very clear pictures using Macro.

I do not want to flood population on any & all years. As such I decided to auction a few in this fashion.

I'll submit all various years I currently have in my posession, a few at a time.

The worst grade I made was a 1959 cut right out of a mint set - PCGS 63 - however back then with pops in single digits, even it, surprisingly, performed rather well.

I've since made an equal amount of PCGS 64 & 65 for other years sent in (I've yet to submit a 56). Again, having been first with pops extremely low, the 64s brought
in a tad over $100 each. PCGS 65s (some were top pops at the time) went for around $150 - $175. I was also one of the very first to auction propertly attributed 66s
& 67s and they performed quite well actually!!

My point is this. Bearing in mind the expense to "make" these I fully intend to be very selective concerning future submissions, as Type B "silvers" go.

I hope this helps with the records regarding this elusive Variety.

1956 PCGS VF 30 attributed went for $36.99 + $3.00 shipping.
1960 PCGS MS 64 attributed went for $20.49 + $1.58 down from last Tuesday's identical item at $36.00 + $1.58.

Well, I'd expect a bazillion dollars since a 1964 in MS67 commands as much as 5 grand. (PCGS Pops show only about 6 at that grade)

PCGS shows 111 1960 type B MS 64 and ANACS, out of date figures, show 60 (40 type B and 20 Breen 4393)

I am working with the Price Guide editor on some revised prices today. Mostly all changing prices are "plusing".

SUMORADA's picture brings up a whole range of emotions in me, including nostalgia, sadness and a feeling of misspent youth.

Without looking at the PUP's, those coins jump right out at me as type B's. The whole fabric of the coin seems different. I think it is a tiny bit of tarnish accumalating in the sharp device/field boundaries thus outlining the eagle in black to some extent. They obviously look different to me 45 years ago when I used to go through silver quarters from active circulation. I would grab one of those oddities and look at it and realize that it was quite circulated and decide it was not really worthy of further consideration. I never realized that pristine white coins existed, but did not jump out at you in the same way. If only I had detected the minor design differences and gone after them. I could have cherrypicked a fortune.

One thing I have recently noticed is that on many of the circulated B's, the areas by LIBERTY and QUARTER DOLLAR are worn away and practically rimless. At this point, I don't know how universal it is or what it means. If you stack up B's all facing the same way, the pile will have one side higher than the other.

Finding a 1964 D type C in true unc was regarded as quite a feat decades ago.

PCGS shows 8 (up 2 since Dec 1) in MS 64 and 2 better.

Strangely enough, ANACS has 3 entries listing these for a total of 31 in MS 64 and 4 better.

First be sure its not a "proof" coin.

I've seen Proof coins offered on eBay as "Type B's" which they in fact are but but the real Type B is on a business strike coin.
