Some vintage football what ifs? to think about

What if these players'teams would have made the alternative decision??? hmmm...

George Mcafee was drafted by the Eagles but traded immediately to the Bears.

Otto Graham was drafted by the Lions.

Charley Trippi was drafted by the AAFC Yankees.

George Connor was drafted by the Giants, but traded him right away.

Bobby Layne was drafted by the Bears and the Colts of the AAFC.

YA Tittle was drafted by the Lions, but went with Colts of AAFC.

Doak Walker was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and the Boston Yanks. He went with Yanks who traded his rights to the Lions.

We could play this game with the AFL and USFL teams too.

I find myself thinking What if Dick "Nightrain" Lane & Marion Motley had a '52 Bowman Large card! Hmmmmmmmm SP? #1 instead of Van Brocklin? A divisable by 9 card? $350? $650?

Imagine a 1935 National Chicle Don Hutson..it would have been his true rookie card! Talk about a high dollar card.

How about a 1935 National Chicle Arnie Herber, Mel Hein, Bill Hewitt, Bruiser Kinard orRed Badgro,

Heres one for you Perk...a 1952 Bowman Large George Blanda ...actually could have a true rookie card as a 1949 leaf! How cool would that be!

A few more just for you Paul.....or a 1952 Large Tony Canadeo..a card of his last year or a 1950 or 51 or 52 Len Ford, Bill Willis and Frank Gatski..or an Ernie Stautner or Bulldog Turner 52 Large...Damn the possibilites!

or a 1948 Bowman and Leaf Emlen Tunnell true rookie card!
or a 1949 Leaf true Norm Van Brocklin rookie?

How strange would a 1955 Bowman Marion Motley in a Steelers uniform look?

OK I am done for now...but holy cow..the possibilites!

that chicle Hutson is the card I always think about when "what if " comes up. I hate the fact that his "rookie" is from over a decade after he retired.

It's a bit of a tangent but I have read that the Packers contacted the Giants regarding one of their assistants, a coach named Tom Landry. Mr. Mara declined to let the Packers talk to Landry but instead offered a different assistant, a coach named Lombardi.

That's a great one....here's another...

The first owner of the Browns offered the head coach job for his new franchise to Frank Leahy of Notre Dame, but had to settle for some guy named Paul Brown!

What if Frank Gifford was chosen ahead of Johnny Bright Philadelphia at #5 or Larry Isbell at #7 Washington or how about # 8 Jim Dooley Chicago instead of at # 11?

Frank Gifford an Eagle or Redskin or a Bear?????????

The only back worthy taken in front of him was Ollie Matson at # 3 by the Cardinals, the funny thing is the Rams had a lottery Bonus pick at #1 and chose Bill Wade at QB when they had Norm Van Brocklin orchestrating their high flying offense imagine how good they would have been with Giff in the backfield with, Dan Towler & Tank Younger????????????

I understand why he went with a more established league and team but I believe Gale Sayers would have had a better career if he had gone with the Chiefs, the team that took him in the AFL draft. Hank Stram would have designed innovative sets and schemes to fit his talent and he wouldn't have been their only offensive weapon, like he was in Chicago.

I like this stuff. I'm with Ryan and Joe on considering what the mythical 1935 National Chicle Don Hutson RC would look like. Further, can you imagine if it were a high number like the Bronko Nagurski?!?

A bigger picture "what if" of my own: What if Bowman had not taken a one-year hiatus from card production in 1949? What would 1949 Bowman Football look like? There would probably be some '49 Bowman rookie cards that currently reside in the 1950 Bowman.

Thankfully as we contemplate "what ifs", we have a lot of terrific "what weres" to collect.

no love for the 1935 Wheaties Hutson? I see zero graded by psa - can that be right?
