Looking for suggestions for a set to build with my 3 year old

I brought my 3 year old son with me tonight to sell some cards. On the way home he told me that he wanted to collect cards. So I would like suggestions on sets that we can build together. Here are the requirements that I want for the set:

1. It must be vintage (Pre 1970)
2. It must be colorful (I think that would hold his attention better than B&W)
3. It can be any sport/non-sport but...
4. It must cheap (I don't want to feel like crying if he damages a card when he's looking at them)
5. It must be a smallish set (no more than 100 cards)

Right now I'm leaning toward the T68 set, Heroes/Men of History. They're great looking cards and I think I can use them as educational tools as well.

So what say you?

If you want educational, you can do 1956 Topps Presidents. Even better yet because there are a few more cards, but post 1970, you can do 1972 Topps US Presidents.
  • 1970 Topps flags of the world. Cards are black bordered and are pop outs if I'm not mistaken. Singles can usually be found in the $2-4 range and packs for around $25.00.
  • Chris,

1952 Topps Look N See are pretty cool. But, I admit at the moment I don't know how big the set is. I am pretty sure it's in your range though. I can get you started too, just drop by. I also have something from India for you.

2006 Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor Chris Carpenter
  • My 3 year old, enjoys looking at cards a lot. However he found crumpling them up to be the most fun thou. image

i would suggest the 55 topps all-american football set. i know its 100 cards and old but do it either raw VG or better or lower grade 3-5, its affordable and colorful in low grade. if you do it raw get the star cards in graded holders so he can't ding them. its an iconic set that he can keep for ever. as he gets older you can pick up the more valuable cards and you have time to put it together, together.

either way great story of when your son ask you to start collecting. congrats!!

if you go this way let me know and i'll send him his first 55 AA to get you started.

Since you say vintage, I would say the 1964 Topps Giants. There are only 60 cards in the set, it has a bunch of HOF'ers, they are fairly inexpensive, and they are large which I think a kid would like.

When he gets a little older, I would start building Topps sets from the year he was born, and keep getting one every year.

Good one there. Topps Giants are very cheap raw and can be found in lots frequently.

Hah! What a coincidence. My 4-year-old loves the T68 set. Of course, she can't quite read yet, but I taught her the names and it became a sort of memory game for her to flip through and identify who's who. She loves to call out "Geronimo!" when she gets to that card.

Perfect for what you're looking for, I'd say.

wacky packages. colourful, funny, relatively inexpensive, etc. not sure, but i think they produced a set in the late '60s, but definitely in the early '70s. i agree that topps presidents would also be a good choice.

have fun whatever you decide. eyebone

Agree with the 64 Topps. Maybe getting them slabbed is the way to go, so he can chuck them around the room. You could also get some PSA/DNA, which would be a great intro to auto collecting.
Kiss me once, shame on you.

  • 1970 or 1971 Topps Supers. Those things are so thick with rounded corners he couldn't damage them if he tried. (plus I have a stack to get you started).

Learn some history of the game. Join a vintage base ball team in your area and get out there.

  • Be careful to NOT ask board members for free cards for your son's vintage card set...that seems to not go so well.

image I wouldn't dream of it. Although I can provide photographic "proof" that they are for him if that is required. image

Thanks for the great ideas guys. I can't believe that I forgot about the '64 Topps Giants set. That may have moved into the lead. But I'm also considering the '56 Topps Presidents and '52 Look N See now, as well as a few others (I may end up doing the T68's for myself LOL). Keep the ideas coming!

64 Topps Giants. That's what immediately came to mind. You can buy top loaders for them.
