ERROR CARD OF THE WEEK 11/08/2009 (1982 Topps Blackless)

Hey guys ! It is that time again. The error card(s) of the week are the 1982 topps blackless. These card are extremely rare errors where the blackl print was left off of the front of the cards. 396 of the original set (some say 400) have been affected. Mostly you can tell by the facsimile auto missing from the front but on all star and in action cards you need to look for the missing black borders.

Here are 4 of my better "blackless" cards. I have about 1/3 of the set maybe more but a problem is that many blackless errors appear on uncut sheets. Then people cut these sheet and/or there seem to be many DIAMOND cut or miscut blackless making bulding a set near impossible at this time.

The cost of these card go up and down like the stock market but are a great find.

Here ya go !

I like those. In most case you know something is missing but you can't quite put your finger on it until you compare with a normal card.

Did/do those come out of packs or did they find their way out the back door a la '85 Topps minis, etc?

Many came from wax and cellos/ never heard of them in rack packs.

but like I said, there were many full uncut sheets with the "blackless" varaitons

Nice cards and as always great post. May I make a request for 11/15/09? Maybe some of the 1980 Topps Variations, Yellow Letters, Pink Tips on Flags, etc. I sorted through two 5000 count boxes and found some. Thanks again.

  • PowerdToastMan, the blackless cards which I've heard were primarily found in cello's and vending are from sheets "A" "B" and "C", with the "B" and "C" cards thought to be the toughest. Blackless cards of players from the Phillies, Orioles, and Pirates will also be missing the black ink that indicates position down in the lower left corner of the card. In all of the cards the thin black border that surrounds the card should be missing, as well as what is mentioned above (name at the bottom of the all star cards, and the facsimile auto on cards that feature one should be missing).

There are also some "Blueless" versions that have appeared. There really isnt a good explaination for the blueless.

I will post a blueless scan tonight. Maybe someone could clear up the "Blueless" cards' lack of information and why you never see them anywhere.

    ?

I only have one blueless card. Does anyone else ?

It seems that the blueless cards are thought to be "snuck" out of topps by employees and filtered out that way.

I have only seen 2 ever.

There was evidence of many on worthpoint.com auctions over the last few years. Other than all of them they seem sooo rare.

I have a set of these. I agree the right number is 396, all cards from sheets A, B and C. The 400 # mentioned refers to 4 "variations" to the set, one of which involves the blackless Forsch card with a red splotch on his hat. The cards could be found in packs, with As and Bs mostly in the NY area and the Cs mostly in the Michigan area. So, unlike the 85 Minis, they had some actual distribution. Cs and Bs seem much more scarce than As. Ryan and Henderson are the most expensive, although I found Morris and Stanley hardest to find in full blackless ( many cards can be found with grey signatures where the black ink had not all run out). I have 6 of the Blueless cards. They are mostly red in color and stand out as mistakes, unlike the blackless which can easily be confused with regular cards on casual inspection. So, I do not think the bluless were ever circuulated.
The SCD Big Book does list the blackless "set" and gives it a price of about $ 5000 in top condition in the 2010 edition
