Raw cards to grade?

I recently picked up a raw 54 Duke Snider and a raw 61 Willie Mays from a shop I came across on a business trip. Scans are below, but I have the following questions. First, I am pretty sure the Snider would get a solid 5, but am not sure it could pull in a 6. Any thoughts either way based on the scans?

Second, would the print marks on the Mays be enough to get a qualifier slapped on it, or would it most likely be dinged a grade or so? The only qualifier I have seen any of my cards get is an OC, so I'm not really sure how print marks are handled. I was hoping that the marks were something that could be rubbed off, but the surface of the card is smooth. Anyway, all opinions are welcome.

    Hi Neal,

I don't think you'd get the PD qualifier on the Mays card, but the print marks will pull the grade down possibly to a 5 or a lucky 6.

Are those scuff marks or gum stain residues? Looking at that card makes me want to take a nylon stocking to it!

The Snider looks like a 6 to me.

  • I tried using a stocking, but to no avail. Looking closely it almost looks like there were some spots where the ink wasn't getting full coverage during printing. Oh well...

You might get 5s or even Altered Stock.
  • 6s on both. That "snow" is pretty common on the Mays. I think the Snider has an outside shot at a 7.
