What was the peak of McGwire's RC?

What are some examples of prices realized on McGwire's RC? I think I remember some RAW examples selling for $300. Can anybody remember raw cards bringing more than that? What about graded? What about Tiffanys? What about some of his 1987 cards? I was out of the hobby in 1998.

The below card, in PSA "10", was selling for over $500.00 back in the day. I remember buying one and getting a great bargain ... I paid ONLY THREE FRIGGIN HUNDRED DOLLARS for the card ... which is probably worth about TEN BUCKS now.

    Bill,

Offer him 600 and see if he takes it. When he says yes, tell him that you were reffering to 600 pennies. BTW, this is the last decent comment I make toward you for the next two weeks. You are now my USSR and I am USA!!! I hate commies.

I remember the 85TTiff getting up to about $4500 in PSA 10, and the regular '85 being $350-400 in PSA 9. This would be in about 2000 or so.

Not a RC but I sold a 1993 McGwire refractor in 1996 for $1000 cash to a dealer at a show. I bought it the year before in a half price bin for $20.

Somebody offered to trade me an unopened 1985 Topps Tiffany set straight up for a NM-ish 1962 Topps set and I had to think about it for a little while before declining.

I remember seeing the 85 Topps sell for $700 to $800 on Ebay for a couple days when he broke the homerun record.

Back then I was happy to realize my 1982 (though actually produced in 1988) Anchorage Pilots card (the blue one with a black and white photo of him) was bringing $300. I paid maybe $20 when it came out. I got it graded and it came back an 8. Of course I never sold it. It's probably back to $20.

I also remember a card shop in a Kansas City mall had 1985 Topps boxes for $1000. Bargain!

    Ouch.
  • I bought a PSA 10 1985 topps tiffany for 1200 bucks in March of 2007. I sold it about a year later for 900. On a happier note, I remember buying a pack of 85 topps back in '98 with all my saved up money (10 bucks was alot) and opening it up in the store and pulling the Big Mac. It was my first big rookie rip and the store owner was ticked off at this little kid...then after years of bragging and years of Mac doping, I sold it in a massive McGwire rookie lot for almost nothing. I will say this: that Mac is TUFF to pull in Mint or Gem Mint condition.image

  • Another great example of why buying Rookie cards during a player's playing days is a losing proposition.

I remember selling a PSA 9 (OC) '85 Topps RC for $125 at a show in 2000. Thankfully I unloaded that baby!

I distinctly remember PSA 10s selling for $5,000 on ebay because I can remember being amazed at the price.

The time to buy that card was early 1986-7 when it was a 5.00 card.

After that and especially in 98-99 it was so inflated that one could only lose.

I would say it peaked around that time.
