I heard about it on the "Sports Talk" forum.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

On August 23, 2008, a press conference revealed plans for the New USFL, a direct revival of the original United States Football League, planning to start play in Spring of 2010.

As of September 3, 2009, the USFL website is simply one large New USFL logo with the phrase "An important announcement is coming 9/8/09". This has been postponed to late September or early October. As of September 20, 2009 an update from Michael D. Dwyer, founder and chairman of the USFL, on the USFL website states "Meetings going all this coming week with news of big names coming to the New USFL. Our Press Conference details are being worked out now and we hope to have that date made public in the next week or two. With so much going on, it will be hard to give updates on a daily basis, but please be patient. We are just about ready to go."

    Season structure

The new USFL season is planned to begin in February and will consist of a yet-to-be-determined number of regular season games. There will be a round of playoffs and a championship game at the end of June. (The original USFL played an 18 game schedule.) Currently, the league plans to not have any preseason games. The USFL plans to play its games Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

I think the USFL would have made it, but made too many bad decisions from the start. Not going in direct competition with the NFL is a good start too.

  • They seem to be taking the right approach. Give football fans an option when the NFL season is over and provide games outside of the traditionall Sunday timing.

The league will only be a success if it drives fans to the stadium. Television alone will not cut it with regards to league success, especially if the USFL does not take home in any major markets. Stick a team in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles (starved for a team), and Dallas and they have a shot. Stick teams in secondary markets only and it will be bound to fail.

This is really the best time to start this league when everyone is out of work and losing there home.
