Waviness - Affect the grade??

Hi - I just purchased a 1966 Topps card that looks mint. It has 4 sharp corners, great centering and coloring. The only issue I can see is that when I lay it on the table is looks wavy from the side. It doesn't look like it's been wet. My question...I want to send the card in for grading...would this impact the grade? Thanks for any help.

P.S. I would post a pic but you would not be able to tell from the scan. thx..

I too, am interested in the replies, as I have some 1939 Goudey Premiums in exactly the same condition.....

These have always graded a 6 for me.

Scan still may help. By "wavy" do you mean it has bends? If so, put it in a card saver,or top loader and it will flatten out.
  • Exactly it has bends ...no creases or anything. I may try the top loader. Appreciate thoughts from others...

I'd suggest putting the card in a card saver, putting a book on top of it, then putting a few boxes full of cards over it, or something to apply consistant weight for a week or so. That should do the trick.

With all due respect, you don't need thoughts from anyone else. I've dealt with scores of cards that have this same issue, and they invariably come back a PSA 6. If you can flatten the card out, then your results might be different.

This may be just me, but I like cards like that. As far as them grading a 6, not sure why that should be. I've sent in a few, and they came back 7's and 8's.

I second the suggestion of placing the card in a CS and putting it under a heavy book or something like that...I've done that and gotten 8s and 9s as a result. Unless there is a surface wrinkle or some other flaw, the wavyness can be corrected and you will get a grade better than a 6 without a doubt.

I'm almost sure we're talking about two different problems. For instance 1969 OPC hockey cards are notorious for having multiple small waves scattered throughout the surface, and these never grade better than EX-MT. If you're talking about a single. gradual break in the gloss then a PSA 8 (or better) is possible.

Two phone books on the bottom.

    Three phone books on top.

    Hard floor.

Card in a folded piece of typing paper. (Toploader is less effective.)

Place the packet about page 200, in the second-from-the-bottom phonebook.

Place the three PBs on top.

Five to 10 days should help a bunch.

I think he is referring to a card that appears to be in the shape of an "S" if looked at from the side

I was also under the impression that you are talking about a card with a single wave to it, similar to what you might pull from a vending box.

  • Yes, exactly, if you look at it from the side, it is wavy like an S. Thanks so far for all the replies..
