My parents had a pretty impressive find today

My parents know that I love to collect pre-war memorabilia. Today they were doing there yard sale tour of South Florida and told me that they had come across a Ruth/Gehrig picture that was signed by Ruth and had a 36 World Series Ticket stub attached. My dad said the guy was asking $50 for it. He said "Is there anything I should be looking for" I said, "Yeah, a $50 bill" My mother didn't feel good not negotiating so she talked the guy down to $40. I haven't taken a look at this in person. If this auto is real (it is personalized) how much do you think an item like this is actually worth.

    A lot more than $40.

for just the ticket I would think... never mind the autograph if real!

    nice pick up.

    No idea on the ticket.
Auto looks authentic to me, but it could be a stamped auto.
Seems I've seen that auto'd pic before. Ruth and Gehrig's barnstorming tour.
Please tell me it's not laminated...

I've seen this photo before. I think the "Yours Truly Babe Ruth" is a facsimile, but the autograph below it may be real. Also, there might be a Gehrig signature (facsimile + possibly real?) behind the ticket.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • I haven't seen it. I had to walk my mother on how to send a scan. She did pretty well for a grandma (My brother's son). I won't see the item until Thanksgiving, but I am quite excited. Even if just the ticket is real. It is really a cool piece.

  • That's pretty cool. I think a macro shot with a camera would get better detail on the auto. Not that I have any idea, but lots of the guys on here do.

    Nice find.

EDIT: Just caught your last post. I guess we'll have to wait for a detailed shot. image

Neat item. The signatures aren't real. Here's another one to show you. Don't know about the ticket though.

I believe that photo is the most reprinted photo of Ruth and Gherig ever made.

My understanding is that this is a copy of the original autographed photo. These copies were then sold during the barnstorming tour that Ruth and Gehrig put on...sorry cant remember the year. The photo is a nice souvenir and in no way is it real. The ticket stub on the other hand.........well that very well might be something!!
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

The photo and auto ARE NOT real....it is a very common reprinted photo....the ticket stub should be worth $50.....the pic is only cool if you are keeping it....it has no monetary value....

PS - the seller was probably basing his high price on the picture...if you had been in person, you could of said something to the effect of..."that is kinda high...how much for just this ticket stub?"....and the seller thinking to himself "that old thing?".....how about $10?

Ticket stub should double your money....
  • I'm quite proud of my parents for this one. For $40 it was a no loose situation. The ticket stub is 99% real and the photo appears to be 99.9% fake. It came matted and framed and if the ticket isn't glued, it would make a nice double mat piece kinda like my Willie Mays item that is my picture icon. Thanks for the help and if anybody has any other comments. I'm all ears.

    Ryan,

Either way, it was a pretty kewl thing for mom and dad to call you, knowing that you are into this stuff! Hoping that the stub is authentic ... if so, a nice pickup.

I just looked it up, and the Yankees beat the Giants 2-1 in game 3 of the 1936 World Series, behind a homerun by Gehrig.

    So...nice items image

Yep, kudos to your parents. My parents used to make me so happy when they'd buy me a pack of cards when I was younger. They were great at tolerating my collecting since they knew what kind of enjoyment it gave me and how it helped my math skills toying with all the stats on the backs. We didn't have a whole lot of money so it was pretty special for them to bring me a few packs home on paydays. Great days and great memories!!!

Even if everything was fake with that piece, it would be worth the $40 simply for the display value. Pretty cool item!

My Dad has a nice reprint photo of Babe Ruth duck-pin bowling that I always loved. Even though it's fake, it would be worth $40 to me any day.

    Very cool either way.

    Hi Ryan,

    Very nice!

If there's one thing in life that you can't place a value on, it's the love that your parents have for you. What a wonderful gesture on their part.

God bless you and your parents ....

    Thanks for sharing,

My mom knows I like old crap, she picked this up for me about 10 years ago at auction for 50 bucks. She actually did quite well, even if they are glued to the back. I would never sell it, but the thought counts tremendously image

"Sounds like the seller knew exactly what he had"

Of course he did, a legit Ruth auto is worth a few grand, is it not?

Still, for 40.00 you can't lose.

    Good for you.
