Mars Attacks question

Thanks for all the help from everyone regarding my previous thread about aviation cards. I am well on my way to spending my sons college money on some beautiful aircraft cards. image

During my non-sports card searching, the 1962 Mars Attacks set keeps popping up as the "Holy Grail" of non-sports card sets. With out a doubt, it is one of the coolest sets I have ever seen. During the past few years, I have seen those cards at shows many times and I always do a double take, but never really considered buying one. My question is:

If a guy wanted to build this set, what kind of money are we talking? Lets say average grade of PSA 5-6 for a graded set. And what about a mid-grade raw set?

I realize I can this info from VCP and eBay, but I figured you guys know the current market better than anyone.

Thanks again

Ken

P. S. My favorite is the one with the dog getting the laser!! If Michael Vic only had one of those ray guns!!!

Ken, I would recommend you do what I do. Wait until a complete or a set with a high completion percentage comes up for auction. You could probably e-mail some of the people on the Registry and see if they would sell you their set and you can build up from there.
Price is anybodys guess. It just depends how many people want that certain card you are bidding on. I think you shoul be OK building a mid grade set as far as money goes. The first and last card will always bring the biggest dollar, but the in between cards are usually in the same neighborhood.
Good luck with whatever step you choose.
  • Good Day,
Good pick on the set. I have one Raw in about that condition from years ago. I am now working on a second. I have about $200 into it and have 16 cards. I bought a #36 The Dog Ray Gun Card (One of the key cards) Raw off E-bay for $31, subbed it and got a EX-MT 6. Total when all is said and done, probably between $800-$1000 depending of course on conditions of certain cards. Occasionally you can still find nice Mid Grade singles for as low as $10 dollars or so, but mostly I have been averaging $14-20 per card.
If you ever get the point of having extras (From buying lots) I may have a few to trade.

does VCP break them all down individually? The first and last card would be interesting to see pricing on. The others appear to all be similar with the exception of just a few "better" (or should I say more popular) ones?
  • Thanks.

    That's just what I needed.
  • In our FAQ section"

    9. How do I get the value for a set
We do not have set whole values because it is rare that you can buy an entire set all graded with the same grade. What you can do though to get a price is simple and just follow these steps. 1. Search for the set and once found click on "Add set to my collection". 2. Create a group. 3. In the top red line is a global add for the set, enter 1 for price then choose the rest, click apply. The information will fill in for the whole set. 4. All of our sets are master and include all variations so make sure to edit them before clicking on add at the very bottom. 5. Now the set is in your collection with the values that you choose. Important the cost is 1 x the number of cards in the set, and should equal the "Total Cost". If they are not the same it means there is some cards that we have no record sales for in that grade. So check for the missing cards and adjust your price.

    Slacker,

We both need to Sh!1T and get off the Pot, I still have the Terror Monster set and really don't care about making money, just want to have a different focus/direction for my E-Bay searching. So make me a trade offer!!! Lets get something going here, make this belonging to the boards here worthwhile!!!!

    hey neil,
i like the monster set you have but i did the math again and a trade isn't an option for my #37 mars attacks set for monster set, i just can't make the numbers work i'm into the mars attacks set for too much for the trade to be fair to me.

  • Slacker,
Actually wasn't looking to trade for the #37 set, just some singles from Mars Attacks you have in your store.
Anyway, took another walk through your store and have a couple questions:

#1 You have some of the most awesome Non Sports Unopened Packs/Boxes I have ever seen, Where did you come up with this stuff???
#2 Have you ever, and I am being serious here, had somebody visit your Store and buy something that you were asking $5-15 thousand for. What is your biggest single Sale for? Right off the Listing floor.
#3 At what point in Price do you feel that it gets to the point where, even though it may be valued at a certain price, we all know that the item will never...and I mean never..... Sell at a asking price?
#4 If you choose to not answer this question.....I have no problem with that......But what is your biggest single Sale ever?
