Source: NASCAR
September 10, 2009

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) has announced that “Voting Day” for the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame will be Oct. 14 at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, N.C.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame Voting Panel, consisting of members of the Nominating Committee along with 29 others representing NASCAR, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, major race track ownership groups, retired drivers, owners and crew chiefs along with motorsports media representatives, will meet in a closed session to deliberate and vote on the 25 candidates eligible for this first class. The vote will be followed by a press conference announcing the inaugural class of 2010.

The class will be chosen from the 51 votes cast by the panel and the nationwide fan vote – which ends Sept. 27 – conducted through NASCAR.COM. The accounting firm of Ernst & Young will preside over the tabulation of the votes.

The hall’s inaugural class will consist of five members and are scheduled to be enshrined into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in May 2010.

The nominees, which include many of the sport’s legendary names and were announced in July, include:

Bobby Allison, Buck Baker, Red Byron, Richard Childress, Dale Earnhardt, Richie Evans, Tim Flock, Bill France Jr., Bill France Sr., Rick Hendrick, Ned Jarrett, Junior Johnson, Bud Moore, Raymond Parks, Benny Parsons, David Pearson, Lee Petty, Richard Petty, Fireball Roberts, Herb Thomas, Curtis Turner, Darrell Waltrip, Joe Weatherly, Glen Wood and Cale Yarborough.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame broke ground in Charlotte on Jan. 25, 2007 and will open May 11, 2010. The facility honors the history and heritage of NASCAR and the many who have contributed to the success of NASCAR.

Results will be at 4 PM
  • I think Earnhardt and Petty will get in on the first shot. The others are all HOF's and will get in soon.

    The LAST One is:

The group (Writers, Car Owners, retired drivers and fans (get 1 vote)) could pick up to 5 each year. I am trying to find the details now.

Added: Up to 5 members each year
  • Junior Johnson over Lee Petty?

I can live without it. I was just curious if they had to choose 5 only or if more could go in based on a percentage as with other HOF votes.

Junior Johnson: 50 wins as driver; 132 wins and six championships as owner

  • << <i>Junior Johnson: 50 wins as driver; 132 wins and six championships as owner >>

Lee Petty: 54 wins as driver (top 10 in 78% of races run), 3 championships. Didn't Lee start what became Petty Enterprises?
  • This article from NASCAR gives Lee credit for Petty Engineering/Enterprises, which won 10 championships and some 270 races.

I agree with you that he should be in. I am sure he will be in the next class to go in. If not then something is wrong. I think Bill France Jr was the surprise in the list.

Nice 1st class. France Jr over some of the other pioneers? pearson?
I can add more names to that list. Will there be a waiting period for induction like the other sports?

But don't forget that Junior Johnson got the Winston sponsorship, which really helped the sport grow.

There were definitely more than just 5 worthy of first class induction. I thought Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt were guaranteed shoo-ins (Fans would've burned down that pretty new building if Earnhardt wasn't inducted). I was surprised to see both Frances make it in first shot.

I agree with 3 of the picks. France Jr. and Earnhardt don't belong in the first round. There are too many other greats from the past that sould have been considered before either of those two.

I won't say that at sometime Earnhardt and France Jr. don't both belong in the Hall but not the 1st round. One France was enough, his son came later. Earnhardt pulled a respectable sport down to Saturday night dirt track level. Pearson, like Petty, won by flat outrunning your butt not putting it into the wall. Pearson and Petty raced when there was a 50 some race season and ran the entire circuit. The 1st round should have gone to the Founding Fathers of NASCAR. The younger fans don't want to understand what I am trying to say but it would be like comparing 1940's baseball with today's standards.

    I kinda agree with melvin.
without the founding fathers taking the sport from whiskey running to the daytona beaches there would be no big time sport. Thank France Sr for the big help and leap. The early guys ran for fun and often drove their race cards to the race!!!

Would there be no Dale racing W/O a ralph racing? So many 2nd generation drivers. It wasn't so long ago that the driver had to work on his own car. Now its a bunch of get in and get out guys. Yes big talent, but nowhere the same. The founding fathers needed to go in first.

Earnhardt brought a raw talent excitement to the sport and probably was the first big promotional tool for all the money that follows the sport thru souvenirs and novelties. Deserving. Absolutely.
