    They really should watermark those photos or lock them from being able to be saved.

    Those are just begging to be saved and reused in fraudulent auctions.

    I know it's not their responsibility to police but...

    The person selling the fake Mantle didn't use the REA photo. Neither the card nor the flip match.

    eBay Mantle, REA Mantle... All manner of weird things going on there.

    Edited to note they didn't even get the size of the card right.

    All joking aside. At what point do things like this become a serious crime. Most of us say "It's just EBAY"; but that is ridiculous. Ebay should contact law enforcement in the city that's registered with the seller. If I got stung like that I would be on an airplane and probably be getting arrested.

    When the LEOs say so.

    Meantime, think of EBAY as a newspaper.

    The newspaper has no liability for allowing advertisers
    to list legal-to-own items for sale.

    Thing is; the newspaper does not take a chunk of the sale. The newspaper does not tell the buyer how to pay. My feeling is if EBAY has no responsibilities in the safe trading of their site then they should only charge a listing fee to host the auction and let the buyers and sellers deal with everything else. I think that someone could make a ton of money doing bogus auctions like this Mantle. The problem is; they could do auctions such as this numerous times. Oh, I just got caught and they removed the auction- well time to change my user I.D. Oh, I get caught again, time to change my user I.D. again. You guys get the picture.

    I get it 100%.

    The law does NOT get it at all.

    Thus, no changes will come soon.

    ...........

    What must happen, if you want "changes" to come:

    1. A Federal agency must announce that they are
    "investigating" suspected RICO violations.

    2. Shareholders must file lawsuits, AFTER that announcement.

    NOTHING else will work. Not now and not ever.

  • I had reported the auction - and strangely enough, the seller ended the auction. Probably to sell it offline to one of the bidders.

    I looked at that card and immediately recognized it was a fake but my question is . . . Why would a seller with so many ebay positive transactions jeopardize his reputation? Clearly, he had to know that this card was not authentic. image

    As the economy continues to deteriorate, LOTS of formerly
    "good sellers" will go into last-period listing mode.

    Folks desperate for money do NOT care/think about their reps.

    So I take it PSA is never going to do anything about this? Should I stop buying PSA graded cards? Why buy something you can't be sure is real. Great job, PSA. I mean, I have never seen a business sit on their hands while people are completely making a mockery of their product. Have some fortitude to do something about this nonsense. I no longer feel comfortable spending my money with this company or on it's products.

    "...So I take it PSA is never going to do anything about this?..."

    ///////////////////////////////////////////

    What is it you expect them to do?

    .................

    The only remedy I know of is for PSA/CLCT to become an active
    VeRO Member and start submitting takedown notices to EBAY.

    EBAY routinely acts on VeRO filings within MINUTES, during regular
    biznez hours. Sometimes it takes longer, but not very often.

    I am not clear why PSA has not been doing that, but I guess they
    have their reasons.

    .........

    Meanwhile, buyers need to be extra cautious.

    Yeah, not sure how a fake flip and card popping up on eBay is PSA's fault.
  • storm888storm888 Posts: 11,701 ✭✭✭

    << <i>Yeah, not sure how a fake flip and card popping up on eBay is PSA's fault. >>

    //////////////////////////

    Certainly NOT their "fault."

    But, the only fast remedy is for THEM to be the complainant.

    You think the best thing for them to do is nothing? That will stop people from making forgeries of their products... doing nothing at all?
  • sportscardtheorysportscardtheory Posts: 1,786 ✭✭✭

    << <i>Yeah, not sure how a fake flip and card popping up on eBay is PSA's fault. >>

    Clearly no one said it is their fault that people are faking their products, but doing nothing about it makes them look really bad and seemingly they don't care about re-sale value of their product. Obviously the amount of fake PSA slabbed cards out there (which is growing and growing) hurts their bottom line and hurts their customers. You don't see any fake BGS slabs out there... is it really that hard to create a slab that is tamper proof.

    "You think the best thing for them to do is nothing?..."

    ////////////////////////

    No, but they must, for reasons I do not know, think
    no action is the right action.

    I think VeRO would quickly end the problems, but if
    brand-owners don't wanna use it nothing else can
    be done.

  • IMHO it looks like a legit image 1953 Topps reprint (size is the key here fake is 2 1/2" by 3 1/2". The card was sent in to get graded and then the flip was doctored. Look @ scan of flip and you can faintly see two different shades of white. then the same serial # was added from the "REAL" 53 Mantle. It even looks like the grade was reduced to a 7.

    Oh well just another day @FEEBAY.

    Since I am always only on the caca end of the VeRO
    stick, I sometimes forget that VeRO members have
    to deal with the same group of marooooooons that
    every other EBAYer does when they communicate
    with EBAY employees.

    Here is a link to a funny VeRO saga that was based
    on "unauthorized use of copyrighted images." I know
    that the complainant was a legit vendor, and you can
    judge for yourself what the EBAY employee is:

    One VeRO Complaint

    Maybe PSA/CLCT knows the challenges of dealing with the
    EBAY creatures and just does not want to get involved.

    ................................
    //////////////////////////////

    Here is a list of VeRO members who have chosen to make
    public their involvement in the scheme. Some members do
    not publicize their membership.
