SGC to PSA Experiences and Advice please

Again I dip into the vast wealth of knowledge everyone here has. I have a vintage football 57 Starr graded SGC 88 (8). I wanted to know about sending to PSA for a crossover. I do not want to crack it out and throw the dice. What experiences has everyone had with sending cards in for the crossover. Thanks as always.

I had a 1984 Fleer Update Roger Clemens SGC 86 (7.5) cross to a PSA 9. The corners on the card are sharp, but centering is about 60/40. If the centering is good enough for a 9 and the corners are sharp, I say go for it.

You can always request a grade review, meaning it would only be crossed over if its the same grade or better without it being cracked open if its not.

I really would not expect to get a PSA grade higher than 8 from the SGC card, but I just want to get an 8. Is a PSA 8 generally considered worth more than a SGC 8?

From what I see typically PSA and SGC values are about the same. Keep in mind the value of an "8" be it PSA or SGC is can vary depending on the popularity of the card, eye appeal and centering.

Thanks counselor! I thought values would be close, it just seems to be more attention to PSA cards.

PSA cards typically fetch a higher price when the card is desirable to more than one bidder who wants it for a PSA registry company, player or team set. For example, a high grade vintage common PSA card will almost always go for a higher price than a comparable SGC card since the PSA registry is much more popular than the SGC registry. SGC is very popular among collectors of pre-war era cards whereas PSA is more popular overall.

I say leave it in the nicer more appealing SGC holder. I highly doubt it will bring any substancial price difference in a PSA holder.
Besides you would have to resubmit more than once in order to get the proper grade from psa.

SGC can be lax with centering. A well centered 88 has a great shot of crossing over but make sure you put "8" in the minimum grade box. That way they won't crack it out if PSA feels its not an 8. PSA will tell you why the card doesn't cross. Usually its for "minimum grade". Occasionally they'll say its trimmed. I'm batting about .500 on crossovers.

I had an abosultely GORGEOUS SGC 1957 Ted Williams 8.5. I asked PSA to cross it. They would not! It looked ALOT better than alot of the straight 8's I have seen.......I, personally, have not had good luck with the reviews.....

Is the cross over service even legit? I'm being serious. PSA should not have this service if not taken seriously.

Alot of these graders actually seem offended by the other graders cards...ie SGC 8's crossing over to PSA 7's, and PSA 5's crossing over to SGC 3's....they are basically saying "We don't respect the other grader's opinion" and your card is really lower than that. I actually can laugh about this now, but I had Danny Fisher over at GAI tell me that an SGC 6 Jim Brown rookie I had would cross over into a GAI 5. What a crock that turned out to be now that I am more aware of the hobby! GAI cards are pratically WORTHLESS!! And here this guy is telling me a SGC 6 would cross to a GAI 5!.....bear in mind, that is just my dealings in the crossover game....I have had better luck cracking out and submitting raw again....

I've stated in similar threads that I've had mixed results crossing over SGC cards to PSA holders at an equal grade, but it is a legitimate service for those not willing to crack an expensive SGC card out of its holder. My best result was crossing over a '73 Topps Munson SGC 96 (Mint) to PSA 9 (Mint). I won the card in an ebay auction for about $72 and it is now worth about 5 times as much as a PSA 9 and is now part of my '73 Topps Yankees PSA registry team set (I wasn't willing to pay $300-400 for a PSA 9 since the pop isn't very low). My negative experience was attempting to cross a '75 Twinkies Nolan Ryan 96; it didn't meet the minimum grade I specified (9); I later cracked it out and submitted it raw and it came back as an 8.

I have sent my SGC 57 Starr to PSA for a crossover. I will let the board know what happens. To me the corners are a lot sharper than a PSA 8 I have and the color is the best I have seen in this card. The centering from what I could come up with was about 64/36 and 59/41. If I know what I was doing they would at least give me a shot of a 8.5 with the corners and coloring, but if I get an 8, I would be happy. The SGC holder sure looked sharp though.

Please show us the PSA 7 scan when you get it back.

I'll root for you to get an 8, but I would bet it comes back 7.

I really hope you are mistaken on this one. This SGC 88 really looks better than the PSA 8 I have. Regardless, I requested a minimum of 8 from PSA. I would rather have the nicer holder with the 88 grade. I will keep you posted. Thanks.

You requested a minimum grade of 8. In that case please show us the minimum grade not met sticker when you get it back. I'm sorry to be a downer but have had no luck with expensive cards on the cross over service.

ive tried psa to sgc, sgc to psa and back in the day psa to gai, gai to psa, sgc to beckett, beckett to gai to psa to sgc......i think you can all see where im going. they all seemed to shoot down the card i tried to cross over. some i cracked out of the case and some i sent in with a minimum grade required, but still in the case. ive sent cards to psa, cracked them out of the case and resubmitted to them just to have it come back "trimmed"....then sent back in and gotten a psa 7.....im absolutely convinced that the luck you have with your cards depends on weather or not the grader is having a good day......unfortunantly i think i usually draw there grader who just got off the phone with his wife who just got done tearing him a new one......

Well you guys were correct. My 57 Starr SGC 88 (8) juist got the minimum grade outcome. That is BS. The card is great and meets the centering for an 8. I think I'll keep it in the better looking SGC holder. Is that right decision?

Yes....I had a 1957 Topps Williams...SGC 8.5....GORGEOUS card!! Probably should have been a PSA 9....It is up for auction in the upcoming Memory Lane auction.....PSA gave it the MG assignment......burn me once, shame on you.......

I cracked open a SCG 1914 Cracker Jack card SCG 3 and sent it to PSA and it was upgraded to a PSA 4.
I have also sent in a SCG 8 and did not crack opent he case, PSA gave it a PSA 5. I think they have to grade the card down to show that the other company missed something!

In my experience with crossovers, I NEVER send a card unless it is cracked out first. I have cracked out a number of PSA cards for my SGC Registry set and have received the same or higher grades. I believe you are right - the company you are crossing over to is not unbiased in their evaluation! The have to send a message that the other company isn't as good and therefore their original assessment was bad! Just my opinion.
