Limbaugh in bid to buy Rams...

I wonder how well a radio personality can run a football franchise? We're about to find out.
Now it will be even easier to plan against the Rams' offense. They'll never run to the left.

ST. LOUIS -- Published and broadcast reports say radio personality Rush Limbaugh and St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts are joining together in a bid to purchase the St. Louis Rams.
KMOX Radio and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch report that the Checketts group has made a bid on the Rams and would keep the team in St. Louis.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined comment to The Associated Press on Tuesday, and the Rams said in a statement that a "strategic review" continues.
In a statement to KMOX, Limbaugh confirmed the bid but would not name additional partners.
Georgia Frontiere moved the Rams from Los Angeles to St. Louis in 1995. She died in January 2008, and her two children are now majority owners.

"I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
...and I would say just the opposite, as would his millions of listeners.
<< <i>If he buys the Rams and gets off the radio it would be the best thing this country has heard in a long time. I say go for it Rush and don't let the studio door hit you in the a$$.
...and I would say just the opposite, as would his millions of listeners. >>
If I want to listen to a pompous, self promoting, all knowing moron, I'll watch Letterman and get a laugh out of it. If you turned your radio off with his millions of listeners, people would go back to work, buy things and help the economy. Listening to doom and gloom forecasts doesn't help the country. And no politics for me thank you. Sorry I even started.

I hear bells and whistles
IMV, he would make a great owner.
There are few wealthy entertainers who have the depth of experience
and knowledge that he has in regard to professional sports. At worst,
he has a great understanding of the games AND their biznez side.
That he has earned an estimated $1-billion+ in the past two-decades,
means he likely has enough cash/credit to help lead the deal.
In the past, he has admired some aspects of the Packers' biz-model.
That could portend some element of "wide-ownership" for the franchise,
which would be a HUGE boost for the team and for football in general.
For their own reasons, the current gang of Rams owners are not likely
to be terribly pleased that Limbaugh is in the mix. His close friends at
GS can likely smooth that challenge over.
BUT, I would expect there to be significant challenges in any approval
processes that will be administered by the NFL itself. Some parts of his
ESPN days may have to be well explained, again; but, if that is all the
ammo the blockers have they will lose.
If St. Louis wants the Rams to stay - and possibly prosper - this may be
their best option to make it happen.
<< <i>warning, warning, warning

What he said.
Keep it on topic - the sale of the Rams -
<< <i>I wonder what Bill Hicks would say about Rush trying to buy a sports team. >>
.........................
Hicks would have loved to own a sports team, if he was around today.
FEW entertainers actually "hate" the folks they make fun of or criticize.
Hicks helped make RL more famous to a new audience, and RL returned
the favor. I loved Hicks and was pretty sure he was a kiss away from
being VERY rich, when he was taken ill.
Sad.

Nobody's commented on Dave Checketts being a partner in all this. Any Knick fans in here care to comment on that choice?
Assuming the fact that Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder can run their own teams (and you can interpret that as you may), I see no problem with anybody who has the money trying to buy a team, politics aside.

While I think DC's style in running MSG left many things to be desired,
I know he is a pretty honest guy and definitely VERY smart.
As is known, I don't like many Bain grads but DC is prolly among the
better ones. He is certainly a good fit with RL to do the Rams deal.
I would put him near the top of the heap, in terms of understanding
how EVERY aspect of pro-sports works.
St. Louis should be REALLY nice to him for a bit. Not good for them
if he changes his mind.

Letterman is a has been two bit hack. Ironic---crackin all those jokes about Sarah Palin's eldest daughter for getting knocked up-- Here's Dave Bangin the Staff!!! Dave should have listened to Johnny Carson when talking about his "new" 4th marriage--"all the wedding gifts are being put into escrow until the divorce is final" ---Top 10 reasons why DAVE won't be on TV soon....
<< <i>As a Rams fan I'd rather have Mark Cuban buy the team >>
As a Rams fan, I'd rather have the band Rush buy them than the radio personality. I happen to agree with a great many things he says (at least I did when I last listened to anything he said, which is at least five years ago), but I just can't stand his personality. Too much of a blowhard windbag. That said, if he was to bring a winning attitude to the team, I'd get in line with it. I agree with digicat, as long as he knows well enough to hire a good team and stay the heck out of the way then he'll do just fine.

<< <i>I guess this means the Rams won't be pursuing Donovan McNabb when he's a free agent . . . >>

It could happen.
If Mc makes a biznez decision, we could see a very
profitable friendship created between a fine athlete
and one of the greatest showmen alive today.
20-million folks a week listen to RL; not a bad fan
base to draw from for a historically stinky team.
It's all showbiz. Trust me.
......
"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well," Limbaugh said. "There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."
IMMEDIATELY before that "controversial" comment, Steve Young
implied that Mc was too incompetent to run an NFL offense. NO
blowback against SY; the game was to nail RL because some folks
did not like him and thought he "didn't belong."
RL's remarks were totally in the context of the ONGOING conversation
about Mc's athletic and leadership abilities, as they had been exhibited
to date. His opinion was as valid as any, at the time. Mc grew into the
hype and surpassed it, but in the fall of 2003 there was pretty WIDE
disagreement as to whether or not that was certain to happen.
The media and a BUNCH of sports-fans DID have an "investment
of hope" that Mc would do well. Just like progressive/reasonable
fans had "hopes" about Jackie Robinson and other black athletes
decades earlier. Denying that is true does not make it a lie; if it
makes folks uncomfortable to hear it, they likely need to.
ANYBODY who says they do not recall that Mc was "famous out
of the gate" precisely because he was a black QB has faulty
recall, or is not telling the truth. RL simply pointed out the obvious,
with ZERO intent to make anti-ethnic conclusions, and his media
foes nailed him. He should have known better.
