Question for the Beckett folks.....

How long is the word/title spamming using BGS alongside BVG and BCCG been going on? I occasionally look for BGS slabes and its very frustrating sorting through all the BVG and BCCG crap. Is there no value in the BVG BCCG labels or am I missing something?

Case in point: someone on BST board just posted a 1961 fleer basketball in BGS. Looking at the pics all I see is BVG. So why not list it as BVG 1961 Fleer set?

The lasting impression seems to be to lure the unlightened to fork over good money for a subpar product. Real or imagined?

BVG is not subpar. Only BCCG is.

BVG only implies older cards, not different grading standards. BCCG implies different (worse) standards.

Maybe I'm missing something here but if there's no difference in standards, why even have BVG? Why not just keep it BGS?

they did it to try to catch Vintage market share. I do not think it worked too well.

    BVG=Beckett Vintage Grading

As was mentioned previously...this part of the company was reserved for vintage grading. Edited to add...I dont think it worked to well either
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

So that probably answers the question. More faith in BGS than BVG - hence the BGS spamming. Has anybody here cracked out BVG and submitted to BGS? Results?

They are the same thing, any cards sent to bgs that are 1981 or earlier are automatically slabbed BVG. You have no choice to get BVG with vintage. BVG is not low quality, it is simply a different label.

  • I have sold many BVG graded cards on EBay and always list "BVG/BGS" in the title. It has honestly never occurred to me that this would be considered keyword spamming- since it's the same company. The reason I do it is because of that small percentage of potential customers who may not know that BVG=BGS.

Ok - fair enough. What year did Beckett then start using BVG? Seems to me I heard some noise about this about 5 or so years ago but never bothered to investigate.

I am not sure which has uglier labels, BVG or the Beckett slabbed Spence authenticated autos.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • As was said before, BGS (cards from 1981 and later) and BVG (cards from 1980 and before) have the same grading standards, while BCCG does not (not even close). The other difference is that BGS gives the individual subscores (corners, surface, edges and centering) that went into the overall grade. BVG and BCCG don't give the subscores.

As for the spamming, I've seen all three (BGS/BVG/BCCG) used in the title when the card has been graded by one of them, I've seen all three used in the title when the card has been graded by NONE of them, and I've seen all three used in the title when it is really a card graded by PSA. Go figure.

I cracked quite a few BVG cards and submitted them to PSA. Every one I submitted got higher grades at PSA. A BVG 4.5 1956 Mantle came back a PSA 7. All of the ones I cracked were from when Becket put the subgrades on the slab.

Actually BVG and BGS does not have the same standards. Back in 2000 and 2001 beckett graded cards VERY tough. You might all remember that
if you submitted cards. BGS 9 was a great grade equal to a PSA 10 in some cases. Any chrome card that was graded BGS 9 always sold for more
    than a PSA 9.

Beckett finally figured out that this did not make people happy. Collectors were sick of getting a bunch of 8.5's and 8.0's on cards they pulled from a pack
last week, what is worse is that the scale was the same for 2001 bowman or 1948 bowman meaning most vintage cards graded by BGS in the early days
were getting grades like .5 and 1.0.

This is where BVG entered, it took age into consideration and graded on a different scale, one that wouldn't kill the card because of a dinged corner or
    wrinkle on the back.

Of course today beckett just takes money. Everyone gets good grades becuase that is what makes them coming back for more right?

  • worse yet is searching

    PUJOLS 2001 PSA

and getting BGS and BCCG crap to wade through~!
