Not much luck at the Philly show

Story of my life: "Sorry man I didn’t bring any 74's with me this time" UGH!!!! All the vintage guys brought 72 and earlier and the modern guys...well they brought modern stuff. We "in the middle" 74 guys are SOL. I realize that they must bring inventory that sells, but I really thought I could pick up some nice 74 Football, and Hockey. Not so… Maybe I’ll just pick up a handful of 52 Mantles.. Anyone need anything while I’m here? I need an excuse to go back to the show in the morning.

    Ken-

I haven't been to a large show in years. Just curious, when you're walking around on Saturday, how many people under the age of 18 do you see? The last major show I went to, there were virtually no young collectors there. It was all older guys with a few college kids sprinkled in. Just wondering if that was an anomoly or is that the state of the market these days..

  • Michael,

I could count he people under 18 on two hands. Its pretty much all old guys (like me) and a few college age guys. The younger guys are all into the modern chase cards, the old guys vintage. Pretty much the same ole story. I did manage to pick up a few nice 74 football cards. We will see how they grade.
  • I would agree with Ken.... No a lot of teenagers.. Saw more as the day went on though.. Sat a a table with a father and son... The son is the one who got dad to come.

  • Alot of teenagers make up the IP circuit, as I've seen plenty of teenage / early college types at the hotels, stadiums, parking lots, TV shows, etc. that get autographs and have tons of cards for all of the players. You are right about them populating shows though.

These are probably the kids that the auto dealers pay to get the autos for them.

  • Honestly, I cannot blame the youngsters for not being into cards -

what do the card companies do to make it "kid friendly" ?

took away the gum, the stickers, the tattoos and the stickers.

now its all chase cards, super rare cards and cards Donald Trumph can't afford.

so its left to the old coots to buy all the super rare expensive cards ....

take them to the grave - woohooo
  • I can tell you that if there was still gum, stickers, and tattoos in card packs, it still wouldn't get more kids in the hobby.

There are TONS of kid friendly priced packs of cards out there. The ones that want to collect are already in the hobby. Just check out Sportscardforum, Beckett, FCB, and all the other trade sites, read some posts, and you will see.

The other kids that like sports are into playing them on XBOX360, PS3, and on the computer.

The hobby is a lot different these days then 20 yrs ago. Kids wan't flashy foil cards, game used cards and autographs. Why? Because that's what is popular now days and that's what will keep them in the hobby in the future.

If a pack of cards today was the same as 1990, I don't see any card manufacture still in business.
  • The big difference - you could buy a pack of cards with gum and a tattoo for 10 cents - have fun for the day and forget about it.

Now its pay $3 a pack and make sure you don't bend the corners and put it in a sleeve and then ... pay for insurance, postage and get it slabbed.

In the 1980's card shows were packed 50 /50 with kids / adults.

Comic book show last week was a 30 year old plus event - much like any of the card shows I've been to for the past 5 years.

Yes - they are into X-BOX, and the few oungsters that hang in there collecting are told to collect the shiney cards - and look up the book value.

No one told me to go down to the 5 and dime to pick up a pack of cards and a bag of candy.

now - the media says its not safe to walk down to the store and gum is bad for you.

then - they tell you you cards coud be worth millions - sitting on cases of 1990's cards.

Anyway - enjoy your collecting - I do.

    cheers

  • I hear ya man. And I still have a few cards from my childhood (which wasn't too long ago)

Times are changing, and the hobby is too.

Hopefully there the ones to buy the old cardboard when there older! image
  • cheers csmtampa !

I'll always be interested in old cardboard. - older the better.
  • Just returned from the Philly show and enjoyed it very much, Here is the problem have 2 daughters 10 and 11 they asked me to pick up some cards so I picked up 9 Total packs, 2 Jonas brothers, 2 Hanah Montana, 2 High school musical and 3 packs of Star Trek. They were priced all $2.00 to $3.00 a pack. they charged me $20.00 for all the packs. When I was a child growing up 9 packs of cards would have cost me .45 cents a nickel a pack. So for children cards went from .5 cents a pack to $2.00 Dollars a pack that is a big difference in price to have children to absorb. Thats why no kids at card shows.

That is a very good point. Even during the 80s/90s the base packs were less than 50 cents a pack. For a 10 spot you had 20 packs, a bunch of ripping and a good start on a set. You could buy an entire box for 15 bucks.

Now for the same 20 bucks you might end up with a blaster with 7 packs with 6 cards a pack and nothing to show for it and hardly a dent in building a set removing one of the hooks from the new generation of buyers.

No wonder kids would rather spend the same 20 bucks towards an Xbox game. You get a lot more entertainment for the buck.
  • I was planning to go to the Philly show yesterday and possibly today but messed up my knee slightly playing basketball, the same one where I previously had ACL construction. I got to learn to call it quits in my older age.

Was there anyone there with decent Basketball autographs? I was planning on picking up a Wilt CHamberlain autograph. Might have to wait until December when the show rolls back around.

    J
  • Dr.J - sorry about your knee. Never slow down .... never say die ... and never give up on your team.

    cheers

I did hear more than one dealer complain about the amount of business they were doing (or lack thereof) and won't be coming back in December.
