Fire-Proof Safe's....Experiences? Recommendations? Thoughts?

I am thinking it would be wise to protect the cardboard investment...anybody with experience or recommendations concerning fire-proof safe's??? I know most are "GUN SAFE'S"...what are your thoughts etc....also, what is the name of that company that insures collectibles and what are your thoughts on them/experience with them? Thanks!

  • Loth - good thinking.

I don't have any cardboard in ours, but we have the Wills, important documents, SS cards, etc all in a fireproof safe hidden in the house.

Going beyond cardboard, fireproof safe is a must for every household.

    Best wishes

what kind did you get? who is the best? who has the best prices?
  • We got our fireproof safe for our "papers" at WallyWorld - It's about the length / width of a laptop, but about 10" deep....neighbors house burned about 10 years ago, and they had a Wally safe that held up wonderfully. We purchased the same "brand" that they had back then. The idea was if it worked for them, it must be an OK brand --- I'll be glad to look up the brand when i get home for you, if you'd like.

I haven't shopped for quite awhile now - but I doubt I would go the Wally route this time around.......seems their crap gets cheaper year by year...

Anyways - when I get in the market I'll probably ask the "richer people" image in our neighborhood what brand they use. Lawyers and bankers are good guys to ask - as they seem to be really careful with their assets, unlike some of us mediocratees! LOL

But I think you're on the right track! ----- Be prepared to set aside a nice chunkochange

    Be well!

wouldn't a safe deposit box make more sense? Fire proof safe is a nice idea but crooks can take off with it.

Besides , we live in the country so the bank isnt very close

If you find one that you like at Lowes, either wait for a mailer with a 10% off coupon or ask customer service and you might get one. Locally, I think I've seen coupons at the post office with the change of address slips, but I doubt that's everywhere.

Point is you can easily find a way to save $50-60 right away. Keep your really important things at a safety deposit box if possible - deeds, pink slips, passports and other personal info, large amounts of cash, etc. Peace of mind is well worth the little expense now.

here is a pic of mine. I put it in when I added an addition. Completely fireproof? No, nothing is. But it holds a ton and is very fire resistant. Cost--about $2,300. Excellent investment. And NO ONE is making off with it!

I have a Liberty Safe, very similar to flatfoot's but mine is a dark green with a deer scene on the bottom.

I think it weighs 700 lbs empty.
