Anyone got a website or price guide for Starting Line Up figures?

I'm going to an estate sale Saturday morning and they are advertising Baseball cards and memorabilia, Comic Books, and Starting Line Up figures (over 1000 from baseball, basketball, football, and hockey). Anyone know how I can get an idea what they are worth? Thanks in advance.

I found a lot of SLUs including a sweet Tim Duncan extended RC for $2 each in a bin at the back of a dingy shop in ChinaTown, Chicago in 2006. RANDOM!!!

I bought out a Wal-Mart of 91 and 92 Basketball SLUS back in the day, packed them away....sad to see they are still at the same prices or lower than the early 90's.

Maybe time to dump everything in a massive fire sale.

thanks for the info guys. Basically, near as I can tell, the '88's and '89's are the only ones worth anything significant with a few exceptions here and there. Maybe they are all '88's and '89's. image

I have seen dealers blowing out figures for 50 cents/$1 at shows in giant bins. Nice ones too. Makes you wonder if it is even worth hauling them to the show to begin with.

Frankly, I am a bit shocked at how precipitous the price collapse was for these SLUs. Particularly given that the other Kenner product, Star Wars MOC figures are still strong. Blue Snaggletooth, anyone?

Yes, 88's and 89's are the way to go. There some ultra rare ones, like the 88 Utah Jazz (or is it 89).

  • I know the old tuffstuff website had a price guide for SLU's.I am not sure if the new site does.

  • There is a strong demand for tough 88 and 89 pieces. The 88 Utah Jazz and the 89 California Angels are tough. When it comes to football, specific players are scarce. Otherwise, anything in the 90's, only key HOF rookies have any significant value. Anything else is below retail cost.
  • I remember back when I was about 15, I went to a flea market and the card guy had about 20 slus for sale.

If anyone ever collected slus, they might remember the 1988 Ron Gant was a rare piece and was valued at $250 with a mint blistercard.

I picked that piece up, and few other 88's and odd years for $25. I sold them on the bay for over $400 (before you needed a credit card to sell)

He didn't have a price on any of them, and it turned out that it was his brother working there that day (which I found out later), so I got a pretty good deal.

    FYI

As mentioned earlier, the condition of the blistercard is extremely important, similar to how corners are important to grading cards.

most of them are in at least NearMint shape going by the grading standards I saw. Going by the most recent TuffStuff price guide they total $4748 in book value. Although using the completed auctions on ebay I realize that most of them bring significantly less depending on rarity. Anyone have any guesses as to the value of the lot? I'll put up some pics later as I have some requested already.
  • In October I had a similar sell of most my slu collection. Most 1993 -2001. With the complete set 1988-1992 of Michael Jordans in mint condition along with protective hard cases. 225 slus for $400. Now I wish I checked the Jordan Slu cards after the guy left he said I like To open Them all up and display them . I knew what he was doing with the jordans... Getting the cards graded! Oh, well.

Add to that rips, tears, creasing of the cardboard packaging and crushed/scratched up bubbles.

I hope you got them cheap.

It is very hard to move SLUs unless you are willing to wait and find the right buyer.
High condition ones are almost impossible to find.

The Jordans are nice especially the 93.
  • Here is an article I wrote about SLUs from a few years back: Starting Lineup Article. It's a somewhat cursory overview; however, I will be glad to chime in if you have any specific questions that others have not already answered.

    Take care,

  • Now sure of any sites.... I know there is one basketball player, not a star or anything and he sells for big bucks. I can't remember the name, but if I remember correctly one sold on ebay for about $500 or so.

That could be the most unhelpful answer I have ever seen given on these forums.

Some people feel they must comment on every thread. I know SLU's are hard to move that's all my knowledge.

If anyone wants the entire lot of 150 or just some individual ones please send me an offer. Im gonna sell them cheap. I will most likely start listing some on ebay tomorrow night if I don't get any offers.
  • For any of you autograph collectors, these make pretty neat pieces to get signed. I got one done by Ben McDonald last year. I might be interested in the Rangers you have, saw Inky and Ryan. Need to check what year my Inky is. I either have 88 or 89. Can you send scans or pics? PM you in a bit.
