Vicious cycle - 82 Topps Ripken

My first eBay graded card purchase was a PSA 8 Topps Ripken rookie. Had it for years before I really got into grading. It would eventually be my first crack and resub.
It came back an 8 again.
Busted a bunch of 82 Topps wax over the years looking for a Ripken 10 or at last a decent 9 to keep for personal collection.
Out of about 20 subbed, the highest grade I ever received was an 8.
Eventually bought a 9. Thought it was a 10. Cracked and resubbed only to get an 8.
Finally pulled 2 from a cello box that I thought were surefire 9's and both had a shot at a 10. Was so confident one would at least be a 9, I sold my 8. One came back an 8 and the other an EOT.
Resubbed the EOT and got yet another 8.
Sent in 3 on one sub in July. One was a BGS 9 crackout that looked 10ish. One was an N6 and one a PSA 5 (Surface wrinkle).
The BGS 9 crackout is now a PSA 8.
So, now I am back to where I started from with a PSA 8 but am now lighter about $1000.

<< <i>yikes. Only fitting that an 8 is the symbol of infinity when turned on its side. >>

Is the BGS 9 the one everyone was saying was sheetcut due to the subgrades?
easier to just pony up and by the 9 or keep your nice 8.

Topps is definitely the toughest of the big four:
Topps 10s = 174 out of 19,775 total graded (0.879% are PSA 10)
Topps Traded 10s = 86 out of 7,302 total graded (1.177% are PSA 10)
Fleer 10s = 94 out of 6,026 total graded (1.559% are PSA 10)
Donruss 10s = 210 out of 7,015 total graded (2.993 are PSA 10)
I've only ever subbed two #21s, and they both came back 8s. Shocker!
<< <i>Bill, if it makes you feel any better, watching you on your quest for a 1982 Topps PSA 10 Ripken convinced me to just go out and buy one instead of chasing it through cases of cards. I figured it was cheaper in the long run, plus I'm into instant gratification. I ended up just buying one for about $450. A little more than I wanted to spend, but I'm just glad I finally have one.

Great card, Jeff. I've always liked that card.
