What would you ask Harold Cooper?

With the anniversary for the site coming I am trying to get some new information up and running. I made a call or two today in hopes of being able to interview Mr. Harold Cooper. Harold was the President of the International League in 1981 and was the man who called the Rochester/Pawtucket game to a halt at 4:09 a.m.. In any case I may have the opportunity to ask some questions and thought I would see if any of you have anything to add. Thanks in advance,

    Chris:

Remind me to try to find you a pretty good article that I have that was written back in 1991 or so about this game (Cooper is quoted fairly often in it). It also has the attendance figures from the game as well (start and finish)

  • I remember from one of your earlier postings that Ripken's old stadium isn't there anymore. I will take a guess that its fate, was a common fate of the stadiums previously in the league (?)....or at least a few of them. (We have a stadium or like age and size here and only by dumping several millions into it have we somewhat modernized it, something many towns might not want or needed to do.

So I guess you could ask his thoughts on the survival of old stadiums, the relics of his league, or something along that line.

  • I would ask him why my subs are taking so long to pop.
  • I would ask that after letting it go until 4 a.m, didn't he have the cajones to let it ride?

    Yes it was.

The story goes that he was at a wedding out of town and did not return home until after 3:00 a.m.. I guess either the umpire did not know the rule or forgot his manual. It has been said that when Harold was called with the question of what to do he replied, "Call the game you idiot".
